Skoda Octavia Estate - Skoda Octavia diesel 1.6 or 2.0 ? - ib33

Hi, I am thinking of buying a used current model Skoda Octavia estate and just wondered which of the diesel engines would be best for reliability and long term ownership.

What sort of budget do you have and what sort of annual mileage do you cover, also will it mostly be used for distance or local driving?

As for choosing between the 1.6 and 2.0 pre 2015 1.6 cars that required the emissions "fix" are becoming a bit notorious for EGR issues so I'd favour the 2.0 which seems less of a problem. If it's a post 15 car it should be ok.

Avoid the DSG gearbox and stick with manual, look also for a full dealer history and be aware that Skoda have a ridiculously short timing belt interval of 4yrs while VW on the same engine say 5 which is more realistic. Remember to price this in when buying any used example approx £400 including water pump and tensioner.

A good car in general and the taxi trade get great service from them but they're prone to DPF issues if used for mostly local stop start driving so don't buy if you don't do enough mileage. The later belt driven 1.4 TSi petrol is a good engine also with near diesel economy and strong performance but its still to prove itself longterm.

It will be a post 15 plate car and will mainly be used for commuting with a good motorway run and for towing, but I am still concerned about the DPF issues.

With towing in mind I'd further favour the 2.0 diesel. Essentially it's the same basic design as the 1.6 anyway and there's little difference in economy in day to day driving however the 2.0 has substantially more pull.

Thanks, I was thinking the same regarding the larger diesel and having the extra grunt to make towing more relaxed.

I tow a 900kg (miro) caravan with the 1.6 tdi in a 63 plate seat Toledo. It's perfectly adequate, I have to drop from 5 to 4 on inclines to maintain 55 that said.

Fuel consumption seems to be about 40 on a long run.

I have noticed I gave to slip the clutch a little when hill starting on a steep incline. Maybe that's normal but I'm new to towing caravans.

When I change I'll be going for a 2.0tdi. The 1.6 is fine but I just feel like I could do with a bit more torque and oomph

Thanks for your opinion, think I will go for the larger engine as our next van might be slightly heavier.

Have you had any reliability issues with your 1.6?

No reliability issues thus far. I'm on 78k doing an annual mileage of 23k.

It's still on its original brakes and the only expense has been servicing and tyres.

Fuel consumption regularly shows between 65-70 on the trip computer (this is about 10% above the calculated actual figure)

I had the update 5k ago so I now have my fingers crossed!

I should have added - I run mainly on by ultimate and have an intermediate oil change between the 18k service intervals. I would like to get to 150k without any major expense before I trade in so I'm trying to look after it.
