Hi guys

Is there any kind soul who lives around the Merseyside area who would take payment of beer (or cash) in return for hooking my car up to thier VCDS to check my cam timing on my GT TDI 140 as I have a bit of a lumpy idle? I think the torsion value on the exhaust cam needs adjusting.

Cheers in advance.

Check out one of the VW owners forums, usually lists of members with VCDS on the,

This will make no difference. VCDS will show the Torsion figure in Measuring Blocks, and to alter it you have to slacken the three camshaft pulley screws and move the camshaft slightly in one direction or the other changing the relationship between the camshaft and pulley. The only effect this will have is on starting. Once the engine is running the ECM controls injection timing. Of course you would like to have the Torsion figure set to zero, but with such tight tolerances this isn't easy to achieve, nor is it totally necessary. If a replacement cambelt is fitted and tensioned correctly your Torsion figure should be close to zero.

VCDS' TDi Timing tool can be used to show injection timing in graph form on many older VAG engines with Electronic Diesel Control (EDC). Ideally at normal operating temperature the point of injection would correspond with the centre line, midway between maximum advance and maximum retard, but it won't make any noticable difference as long as the point of injection is somewhere close to the centre. And in any case this will only affect starting. Once again when the engine is running the timing is controlled by the ECM. Your engine being a PD does not support this feature.

Hi Railroad

Thanks for the comprehensive answer, it is appreciated. My engine code is BKD, not a PD or am I barking up the wrong tree? The engine shake at idle disappears when the Aircon is on. I've just recently had the cam belt, pulleys and water pump replaced by Awesome GTI, as it was well overdue, but the engine shake was present before the cambelt was changed. It's widely reported on many forums that this could be the issue with the cam timing, but totally understand your logic that the timing is under ECU control when running tho.

I've just today stripped and cleaned the EGR which was quite badly chocked up and this has improved the throttle response but the shake is still there at idle.

Many thanks again.

If your engine is not a PD (Pumpe Dùse) then what is it? You say the engine code is BKD and to the best of my knowledge that's a PD. Common rail engine codes have four letters starting with a 'C'. The valve timing on your engine is fixed, not variable. The injection timing is variable and is controlled by the ECM when the engine is running as stated earlier. The injection pump on a CR engine is driven by the engine but is not timed to it. It does not matter where the pump pulley is when fitting a cam belt on a common rail, but of course the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys must be locked in their respective positions, and the belt correctly tensioned. There will be no Torsion figure on a CR engine because it doesn't apply.

As for your engine vibration perhaps you should check the air intake system for build up of heavy carbon deposits from the EGR valve to the cylinder head. Removal and manual cleaning is really to only way to clean it. Also you could have a worn Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF).

Thanks RT. Already in contact with someone, just waiting for a reply.

EGR should not be operatng at idle.

Hi jc2, no problem. It has never been done after completing 130,000 so for the price of some carb cleaner I thought I'd give it a go. The way I see it, it's one less thing it could be.

Cheers.
