Ford Focus TDCi 1.6 2006 - MOT fail excessive metered smoke - K21000

This is my daughters car who is learning to drive. She does potter around on short trips as a learner which is not good. It's had a new EGR valve recently as the EMS light was on. It runs very well but is a bit smokey at times considering it does also have a DPF. No EMS lights have ever come on though apart from the previous EGR fault, now all clear. It ran like a pig anyway with the EGR issue. Mileage 113k. It has been regularly serviced. It's had a new injector seal replaced recently too. There has been an ongoing problem with the crankcase breather pipe though since we got the car a few months ago. Engine bay had lots of oil around it and the clip was broken, so the pipe was half hanging off. I cleaned up the engine bay and put a new clip on. Pic below was with a temp cable tie. There still seems to be oil leaking from there and I am not sure if it's getting into the system and causing issues. I have 10 days to sort it before the retest! I gave it a 12 mile dual carriageway run today at a constant 3.5-4k (4.5k is redline) as the tester said it may just need a good thrashing.I have googled a bit and this pipe seems to be an issue, PCV valve also mentioned. I am praying for a cheap fix as she will soon pass test and can get rid. It failed on suspension bushes too which is £150. When it rains, it pours....

It might not have a DPF at that age - if it has and it's failed on smoke, then there is something seriously wrong. If it doesn't then some injector cleaner and a good hard thrash should sort it!

This engine is a total money pit. My advice would be to send it to auction, where there's always someone who'll give money for an old diesel even without an Mot then go and buy a simple petrol engined replacement which would suit the type of driving it will be used for.

It might not have a DPF at that age -

A 2006 1.6 TDCi 110 PS would have a DPF from the factory and uses EOLYS. Unless of course the DPF has been removed/gutted, the ECU modified to suit and the EOYLS system similarly modified. If that is the case the car is illegal to use on public roads and should fail the MOT.

A 2006 1.6 TDCI 90 PS did not have a DPF from the factory and does not use EOLYS.
