Applying for a new driving licence at 70 - FoxyJukebox

My paper licence expires in around 3 months when I hit 70.

1) Will I get a reminder from DVLA?

2) if i don't-can I apply anyway? is there a web-link? when should i apply?

3) Can I do it on line or do i have to go to a Post Office?.

4) Has anyone got any tips to ensure my experience is smooth and stress free!?

Check the entitlements on your current licence and make a copy. I have heard of classes dropping off when they have been reissued.

I still have 7 years to go so I don't know if you get a reminder.

The following page says you can apply if your British licence has expired – or it’s going to expire within 90 days.

No reminder - you can reapply three months before the existing one expires - online if you already have a photo licence but bycompleting a form if it's an old paper-only one.

If you passed your car test before 1997, you'll have C1E and D1E currently - but those are only retained if you take, and pass, the chargeable medical - you'll also have BE which is retained without the medical.

I have to apply for a new driving licence every 3 years for medical reasons. The reminder comes by post about 3 months before its expiry. Rather scary to fill in but the full truth satisfies DVLA and my replacement licence arrives within 10 days.

So making sure your eyes are properly tested and you wear any corrective lenses and all medical conditions are declared and properly treated- you and all the other road users will be safe as can be.

When you apply to renew your licence, the new one will be a photo-card. This is easy if you already have a current passport. They will use the passport photograph for the licence and send it out to you. Otherwise you have to send them current endorsed photographs for the this purpose. Should all be just a formality. I got a notification from DVLA about 3 months prior to my birthday and was able to do it straight away on line...easy peasy.

They accepted my current photo that's on my licence...though no doubt that might changwe when the next renewal comes up in another 2.5 years.!

It was all quick and painless.

Yes you will get a reminder and if you have the old paper licence you will need to fill in the form and attach a new photo cost £5 in the booth. You will have to declare any relevant heath issues and get the photo authenticated by someone. My reminder was received some 10 weeks before the renewal date so would advise you to wait until about 2 weeks before renewal as you will have to do it again in another 3years!

You can apply at any time within the 3 months before it expires - the new one expires the day before your 73rd birthday so you don't lose any time.
