Just shown this to SWMBO and the resulting rant is still going on...this is a brief summary

thats because they have too much money and no brains and need constant supervision

normally prepared for them by their staff or restaurants and should leave them to it

The Lord has also been called upon in exasperation

its a wonder they can feed themselves

shaking head muttering 'bimbos'

almost speechless now after 5 minutes, hang on second wind, something about having a warning tattoed backwards on their foreheads so they see it in the mirror, more dumbing down to lowest common denonimator so we're all to be treated like idiots, steam now emerging from ears

See what you did Focussed :-)

The slightly-more-evil-than-normal part of me looks forward to a huge solar flare, that causes an EMP-type effect. On a temporary basis, of course.

Just so I can sit back and watch the chaos, and laugh at all those urbanites trying to figure out how to manage a world where you have to be competent at something that doesn't involve a touchscreen.

It's been widely reported in other media too:

The Guardian reported what the "professionals" said. As did other organs, but they also put forward for comment, that maybe this fuss is a bit much.

The trouble is that k****** knives are supposed to be SHARP and I mean sharp - which most people worry about, as they think oh no it's sharp I will cut myself.... whereas actually the contrary is most likely true, a properly sharp knife does what you ask it to, and will not cut you if treated with respect. Mine are regularly stropped on a diamond steel - and I take them with me to self catering outfits as there's nothing more annoying (or dangerous!) than a blunt knife when you are used to properly sharp ones. And don't get me started on those horrible serrated ones - they can REALLY make a mess of your hand!

Nowadays, I am told, that Domestic Science as it was, is now called Home Management or some such glorified title so the little darlings can be domestic 'engineers'. Any way it is told to me as truth that a basic cooking class consists of pierce and microwave a ready meal and boil in the bag rice. This is then classed as a meal for your partner/whatever. If SWMBO presented me with that load of tripe I would not eat it. She wouldn't anyway, but you get my drift. I did overhear two young women in the supermarket the other day, discussing the evening meal for their families. Yes you guessed it. The couldn't decide wether to have the Shepherds Pie or the Chilli. Both ready meals of course with microwave veg or chips no doubt. Their poor families. They havn't a clue.

Cheers Concrete

Another nail in the coffin of respectability for my profession - it seems any old Joe who 'makes or fixes something (presumably dinner out of a box here) can be called an 'engineer' these days. And government experts wonder why most graduates end up working abroad or in much higher-paid City jobs...

I know somethings get dumbed down nowadays but think this this case you aren't being told the 'truth. about this.

I questioned the person who imparted this to me. His wife is a teacher, and although every class concerning Home Economics or Management is not like this, it is typical of the allowances made. Pupil are allowed to use ready made products instead of learning how to make the basics from fresh ingredients. And yes, the microwave does play a part in the process. It just reminds me of when calculators were allowed instead of working out in your rough book or use a slide rule. The answer the calculator gives may not be correct but you are in no position to realise that because you cannot work it our for yourself. QED. Just a gradient on the slippery slope to dumbing down by not insisting the basics are learned well before progressing to a higher level. When I was invovled in recruiting apprentices when in my early 20's I was astounded that applicants from my old school were so poorly educated. This was the school I attended only 7 years previously. Their application forms, hand written in those days, were appalling. We did take on some young lads after interviews, and they became good apprentices. They were not dumb, just badly let down by the new style 'Shirley Williams' education system. That woman has a lot to answer for in my book. Cheers Concrete

Daughter currently staying with us for a few decides to add avocado to a bacon sandwich. Works in Blood Transfusion service and related a conversation with a paramedic making a donation. He'd attended an avocado related 999 call; knife went right through patients hand.

Also seem to remember broadcaster Adrian Chiles telling of his having a similar injury trying to seperate frozen fish fillets with a sharp knife.
