Good afternoon I'm after some advise on garage repairs, my car wouldn't start November 16, took it to Vw/ Audi specialist, he advised car had dpf filter blocked up also rocker cover needed to be removed and cleaned due to running car on incorrect oil, I had a bill for replacement dpf from motor factors and fitting for £1045, car has been back in garage since end of January 17 due to breakdown, garage said oil filter was clogged solid and caused the engine to blow, I'm not a mechanic, but Surley this should have been replaced when the original repair was done? I would appreciate some advice

You don't say how long the car had been back with you, or what sort of mileage it had bone in the time between the 2 breakdowns.

Basically, you would have to show that the negligence of the first garage caused the failure, in some way.

A professional engineer's report might be your best way forward.

The same garage. Did both repairs, there was about 9 weeks back with me and around 2500 miles , they are charging me £1105 today for a recondition turbo, he admitted clogged oil filter caused this problem but my question is shoukdothis oil filter have been changed in the original repair November 16

Something doesn't stack up here. If they stated that the car had issues because it had been run on the wrong grade of oil then they should have carried out a flush and an oil change which would of course involve fitting a new filter. It made no sense to do any work without doing this also and I strongly suspect you're being fed a yarn.

The car then suffers another costly breakdown which again is said to be because of sludge build up which they suggest is down to this incorrect oil I would say they were negligent, certainly incompetent but proving this and whether the initial advice was wrong will be difficult.

Who carried out the previous service? Has it been serviced regularly? And what grade of oil was used? The garage who carried out the service work is liable if they've put in the incorrect oil but you must have receipts showing what they put in it and when in order to hold them to account. Has it sludges up through lack of maintenance?

Don't let them do any further work to the vehicle! Arrange to have it recovered to another trusted garage, preferably a VAG specialist who understands these engines to have it properly assessed then take it from there.

A different. Garage repaired my oil pump in August 15 I had a bill for £1500, on the receipt it just states oil replacement.

I told him today why didn't he change the oil filter when he cleaned out the rocker cover and replaced the dpf filter? His reply was I didn't need to change the oil or filter because I changed the Dpf filter, and that's nothing to do with it, I couldn't argue I just thought it would be commen sence to change it if he said the current oil had caused it to sludge up

They may have changed the external oil filter but according to my trusted indy he has seen a few Audis with the mesh screen on the oil pump pick-up in the sump clogged, some leading to engine failure.

There is only a very small clearance between the bottom of the pick-up and the sump, so if sludge collexts in the sump oil flow is impeded. If they didn't remove and clean the sump, this may be the cause.

Moral of the story. When you're running a complex turbocharged motor, service it at a main dealer or genuine specialist only. Joe Blogs backstreet dealer hasn't a clue with stuff like this. They haven't the tools, diagnostic equipment or technical know how. If you cannot afford to maintain a car like this correctly then don't buy one. You cannot run what was an expensive and complex executive motor on a shoestring. Sadly this is an expensive case in point.

Yes I agree, they shouldn't be in business it makes me think they don't do the job correctly on purpose for repeat business
