Hi

I recently bought a second hand car and the dealer insisted in removing the original plates and putting on plates with his garage name and address. When I queried this is said "It was a legal requirement"

There was a thread about this back in 2007 which seemed to suggest that Number plates must carry the name and post code of the maker of the plates and not necessarily the garage.

Can anybody confirm if this is the case and maybe even point me at a definitive reference

Can I buy a new set of plates (eg from ebay) and get rid of the garage name?

The garage is wrong - there is a requirement for the plates to show the plate maker's postcode - but not for the garage that sold you the car.

It's not strictly legal to buy plates online as you need to show the V5 and your ID - but it's what I do as I don't have any photo-ID - if the plates are otherwise legal the chances of getting any penalty is very low.

I wonder if the old plates were old enough that there was no maker's details on them.

However, even so, I don't believe the legislation applies to existing plates, just to newly supplied plates. Far more likely is that the selling garage wanted to have their 'name' visible on the car - free advertising.

Thanks

That is what I thought. Issue arose because I did nto want the garage's name alll over my car and they quoted this 'law' as a reason for doing it.

Close examination of the plate shows also the makers name and postcode in very small letters

I had a number plate made for the caravan without any difficulty and it arrived a few days later with a fixing kit. I also changed the original number plates because I wanted the GB sticker on the plate. No problem then either. Cheers Concrete

You should be asking for a discount for advertising his garage on the plates.
Proves never to believe what a dealer tells you.

If you keep a car long enough for it to be of interest as a modern classic (and then beyond) the original plates being fitted, especially if they were quality items and show a now long gone dealership, and weren't just printed out with a postcode, as so many are now, are desirable.

A used car's dealer's modern plates are of no interest to old car buyers.

If i have to replace plates i've long been getting them made with a Union Flag and GB stamped on them, not that horrid little circle of stars denoting surrender/subservience.
