So I took my car in as it had the DPF light on which they managed to fix for 80. While doing this they told me they thought my gearbox which has only 40k on had a bearing issue. I hadnt noticed any issues noise or problems getting in gear however it is automatic. This went on for a whole day with them offering to send my gearbox away to be fixed butr couldnt quote me. They said my car was not even safe to drive which I find strange as I drove 150 miles Sunday with the DPF light on. This is an independent garage who I use regularly. So I trust them but it seemed really odd and also the fact when I asked for a quote they said until they send it off they wont know.

I have asked for a second opinion from a place that specailises in just gearboxes. Who has said if it is just the bearings its around 2k because it is auto. However it may not be the gearbox as they have had issues before and given second opinions.

Wonder if anyone has had a DSG problem but not realised and had no symptoms until a garage has seen it? Also what should have I noticed symptoms wise?

Thank you in advance

if its running fine ignore the free advice, i think its a fraud, but your car needs a DSG oli change which should cost circa 130 to 170 all in. DSG oil change on the wet clutch version (Mk6) is necessary and manadated by VW at 40k intervals. You could get a second opinion but only from an auto gerbox specialist

Bad news for you, a DPF cannot be fixed for £80. All they have done is temporarily reset the light or possibly disconnected the bulb. They may have done a forced regen but in my experience independants rarely have the software to do this, its main dealer territory and costs probably double what you paid and even this can be a temporary fix depending on the age of the vehicle. Only permanent fix is a new DPF.

The above proves to me your garage are rip off merchants and are best avoided.

Thank you I will change garages then. The issue was my car wouldn't regen not the filter was blocked Then when they tried to regen it it wouldn't do it then they found this out. Luckily my friend reminded me I only bought the car August from a dealer so have contacted them and they said if it is a gear box they will get it looked at and go from there. As luckily I part paid with credit card. But if it isn't gewr box I'm trading her in next year and leasing a car then I won't have this issue.

In more news the gearbox place thinks it's the front right wheel bearing which is making the noise. They will fix this then relisten to the gearbox but there are no fault codes and it appears to work fine :). I will be posting a review of my old garage to warn others if it is the wheel bearing.

Do be aware that you must allow the selling garage the opportunity to fix any fault - if THEY have sent the car to the 'gearbox place', then all well and good, but YOU do not have the right to get the work done and then present the selling garage with the bill.

Furthermore, a 'noisy' wheel bearing is not a fault until it fails. So would not come under CRA legislation anyway.

Luckily I told my garage well old garage now not to touch it and get a proper gearbox place to look. As they told me it was def a gearbox noise to be told by gearbox guy the right wheel sounded like an aeroplane taking off but gearbox seems fine. Not sure how my garage got it wrong. I will be complaining and leaving an appropriate review to warn others. I don't mind paying for a wheelbearong I do mind them offering to take my gear box out for 500 and getting it split when it appears they wouldn't be able to hear the gearbox noise over my right wheel ?? I will be complaining and asking for something

So as someone said the dpf light has come back on. I'm taking it to a dif garage but could glow plug 3 error code cause it to refuse to regen. The garage said it wouldn't regen and did something with a. Omputer which turned off the light for all of a hundred miles
