Not long ago I'd never have contemplated buying a Kia. Very impressed by the Ceed, great looking car, should be many more on the roads. Wonder why not more.

Why not more on the road ?

A mixture of badge snobbery, and the fact that it takes a long time to build brand awareness and reputation - and it also takes a long time to destroy such a reputation.

You only have to look at the sheer number of people who post about problems with Golfs and Passats, who say (the equivalent of) "I bought it because they're reliable".

We've got a Kia Rio as a works 'pool car'. Done 20k in the first year, and it's very nice and comfortable. It replaced a 2008 Rio, which did 110,000 miles with no problems at all.

Although I have had different makes of cars and have tended never to get the same make, if I had to replace my current KIA, I would definitely choose another KIA.

In fact, I was on holiday in the US recently, and at the car rental place, you could choose from a whole row of cars of different makes in the appropriate class, and I specifically chose a KIA; it was not a model I was familiar with or available in the UK - Forte - but it was a great car. I'll have the say that the trip computer's reported fuel economy figure wasn't great, <40mpg even on a drives that were almost all freeway, though as this was the US in cost it was still super cheap to run.

US gallons are smaller (3.8l) than UK gallons (4.5l), so the 'UK MPG' would have been around 18% more.

Wonder why not more.

With a 7-year warranty and many satisfied customers, repeat sales are lower than conventional brands

Had a Kia with a Hyundai badge and it was terrible, never again will we be seduced by cheap versions of Japanese cars.

They're not Japanese, in fact South Korean.

Sportage is now 10th best selling car in UK for November.

I think davey was saying that in his opinion they were a cheap knock-off of Japanese cars, not poor Japanese cars.

I personally think they and sister firm Hyundai have improved their build and engineering quality a lot over the years, though I still wouldn't quite commit to buying one for my (impending) next car purchase, mainly because they seem to offer only lower-powered engine variants on the models I'm looking at.

This may change as sales continue to grow and they can develop more variants and broaden their sales base, and I would be open to looking at one - I recently checked out the latest Hyundai i30 and was impressed with the car, especially the interior quality and comfort in particular.

This is probably much to do with our puppy like enthusiasm for the global warming industry, even when it helps destroy our own real industries.

They did stick a 3.3 V6 petrol in Sonata (and the very low volume Grandeur), though it wasn't going to sell well due to the badge not being especially fashionable at the time and £500 VED didn't help it win many fiends, Magentis similarly had either 2.5 or 2.7 V6's, i expect in other countries not burdened by such things that larger engines are an option.

It's going to be an interesting few years as a new ethos sweeps America from January as someone with proven business acumen at long last leads, maybe we might have a rethink here if he proves himself and the US recovers, you never know.

As for build and engineering, my son in his youthful exuberances managed to destroy most of his cars, the only two which proved unburstable were curvy Accent MVi and Coupe F2.

It's a lot of car for the money. I'm not surprised.

Hyundai's were never rebadged Kia's - current Kia's all use Hyundai platforms but aren't rebadges - at least not in the UK - in some markets some wierd rebadging goes on.

In case you hadn't noticed, both Hyundai and Kia are the two brands who's products have improved in quality every generation.

I've done 7,000 miles now in a Kia Sorento that I bought at the end of June. Some of that towing 1500kg.

The car is comfortable, and very stable when towing. The headlights (HID) are great, and make my morning commutes easier. They've put a lot of attention into the little things too - Autohold [keeping the footbrake on when the car is stationary] is wonderful, and when I turn off the engine, the parking brake applies automatically. No rattles. No faults.

The only negative about the car is that the satnav maps are too old, and the routing not sufficiently good. But I'm used to using google maps to navigate - which is a high bar. Kia are apparently aiming to move to android auto (and the apple equivalent), so I'll be able to have the best of both worlds. The update is still a while away though - expected sometime in 2017.

Some of the dealers are below par, especially in the service departments. I can understand Kia UK having to compromise in the early days, but they need to sort this if they are serious about entering the big league.

We've only bought Japanese cars [mainly Honda and Toyota] for the last 15 years, but not regretting the choice.

We bought a Ceed SW back in 2010. Before we went to the Kia showroom we had driven Ford, Toyota, Honda, Skoda, Seat (probably more) but all had some issues for us wheras the Ceed ticked all the boxes, the price to change was less than most of the opposition and the 7 year warranty was the icing on the cake.

Had it for almost 5 years, no problems other than a leaking A/C condensor which was replaced at 4 years old under the warranty with no quibbles. The dealer was nice to go to and when we were selling it I went to see the salesman to get an idea what I should be asking privately for it (not buying another car at the time). He offered good money for it there and then and they paid me bank transfer. The garage owners niece got the car.

Currently going through the buying process (going to sign a deal later today) and if Kia did a car that ticked all (or enough boxes) I would buy another. Problem is that for us they don't do quite what we want i.e. an economical 1400cc (approx) turbo petrol in a roomy body. The Ceed estate only comes with a 1 litre turbo petrol (too small in my opinion when loaded), the Carens only gets the old 1600 non turbo petrol (no low down grunt) and while the new Sportage is quite a bargain to get the turbo petrol you have to have 19" polished bling wheels, sports suspension, leather seats and 4 wheel drive, none of which we want.

Shame since the garage is only a 5 minute walk from home. Maybe next time.

Had one of the early Kia cee'ds and it provided a good value-for-money package - main problem ride quality - tended to be very firm.

Currently looking at the Kia Niro - once again, a good value-for-money hybrid compared to the Toyota Auris/Prius. Bit worried that Kia have launched it in Spain with an advertised 22% discount
