Are these reliable little cars? Looking for a cheap runabout, not bothered about styling or equipment levels.

I've seen a 2006 Getz with low mileage (50k) for £1.3k.

I seem to remember the old Hyundais had a 10yr warranty, or something like that. When they were first gearing up to take market share away from the big boys.

Cheap simple wee cars, usually owned by elderly owners who look after them but remember the timing belt interval on these is 50,000 miles or 5 years whichever comes first and as a low mileage budget car it's often overlooked. If it's not been done then price it into your equations (£200-£300) including a water pump which should be done at the same time. Warranty was 5 years unlimited mileage on these from new which shows the confidence Hyundai had in them.

Thanks, SLO76.

A Getz with a bit of service history would be ideal.

I presume parts are not a problem nowadays. Hyundais are everywhere.

They sold loads of these here so parts both original and aftermarket are cheap and plentiful. Certainly no worse than any other small car for ordinary wear and tear items. I've yet to meet anyone with one of these who's suffered a major breakdown. Old punter had a 1.5 diesel with a weak synchromesh on 2nd and 3rd gear but it was well over 100k and gear changes could be made cleanly enough with a little care. Wee car had been abused too.

The best engine was the smallest, the 1.1 which was almost as nippy as the 1.3, better on fuel and revved more sweetly. It's not exactly a hoot to drive but that's not the point at this price point. Keep it simple. Stick to petrol, look for proof of annual oil changes and only buy a car that's been owned for a long time by its current or previous owner. Short term ownership often signifies a troublesome motor.

I seem to recall that the Getz had a crankshaft problem around 2005-2008 - the retaining bolt for the front pulley etc?

Can't say I've ever encountered it. I've heard a few tapping away going through the ring, sounds like sticky tappets. Every one was a neglected example with little or no history. Flush and fresh oil might cure it but I wouldn't touch a wee car that's been starved of a bit of care. Yet to meet anyone with a major issue or had one come back to bite me. I'd be surprised if a well maintained Getz went wrong but as with anything man made with lots of moving parts you can just get unlucky.

Hi, yeh mine started making a "clatering" noise from the bottom pulley area...the local dealer said that they fixed them free of charge when it happens (but not in my case as it was 10 years old) a local garage sorted it at a reasonable £45. The car has done us proud for 40000 miles passed all MOT's no prob, I change the oil and filter every 10000 miles and do everything else as required. It is a cracking little run about / second car, we just wish ours had aircon.

Well I should''v kept my mouth shut...a metal power steering hose split this morning. Is that something you can get a repair kit for, as a genuine replacement pipe/ hose is very expensive?

Find your local Pirtek hydraulic repair shop and take it to them to make up a replacement.

Well I managed to get the pipe repaired by a company in Liverpool as no one could match the thread on the fittings, all went well however the power steering pump started off quite noisy and has now settled to a speed related whine ( same as a worn clutch thrust bearing sound) is this something that will possibly settle as any air disipates or will the pump prob be no good as when the pipe burst and I lost fluid it went very noisy then ? ta

I would highly recommend! I've got a2004 1300 petrol. Lovely quiet engine, reliable and well built. If i was looking for another cheap car I wouldn't hesitate. Good to drive and very comfortable too.

I had a 53 plate 1.3 CDX, excellent value for money, decent to drive and quiet. Only drawbacks were the 1.3 engine, which was quite thirsty for the size, and the ECU failing just after the warranty ended. However, late models feature the more efficient and economical 1.4 engine and I'd imagine any faults around 5 years old will have been sorted now.
