Citroen C5 2.0HDI 110 2004 - Solid flywheel vs Dual Mass Flywheel - fv43576

My Citroen C5 had dual mass wheel failed make noise, gargae said. On my service history the previous owner had fit new DMF at 56,000miles then again at 92,000 miles. Now it is my turn at 140,000 miles so that is aprrox every 40,000 miles that's how long DMF is last must be the weight of car. I have read lots of people have DMF failed is not so reliable is prefer to replace to solid flywheel. When I use to own Peugeot 306 2.0HDI 90 it has got a solid flywheel which I never had a issue from 70,000 miles till 245,000 miles on the clock. So it make me wonder if I took off from Peugeot 406 2.0HDI with 90bhp which has got a solid flywheel and swap to my Citroen C5 to stop get other problem in the future.

What is advantage and disadvantage of Solid and DMF?

Performance: better or worse if I have solid over DMF?

Noise: same noise with solid over DMF

Engine vibrate and drove off from start: DMF smooth than solid? My 306 was smooth which is have a solid flywheel

Gear change and clutch feel: Solid feel light and easy to change the gears than DMF?

I am ask for advice which is better to change to Solid or back to DMF. Lot of taxi driver have replace to solid

Modern diesel engines produce lots of torque. Unchecked, especially in lower gears (for example with hard acceleration), that torque would tear the cogs off the wheels in the gearbox.

So the DMF acts like a shock absorber for that torque. Remove it, and your next repair bill might well be for a new gearbox, costing thousands.

I recently scrapped my C5 estate which still had the original clutch/DMF at 200k, my recently scrapped 406 which has the same engine had done 246k on the originals so I don't why some last so long and others not, I can only conclude its down to the driving or whether they have been used for towing.

I bought another 406 about a year ago and that did have a replacement DMF and clutch at 180k. To be fair I do drive very gently, rarely above 60 mph and 2000 rpm, maybe with more spirited driving they don't last.

Thank you, I have made up my mind to keep the DMF over Solid, I have found good quality LUK made in UK is more expensive than the cheap one on my with no name print on flywheel probably China remanufactured rubbish metal.

There is an official Peugeot DMF to SMF kit available for the 110bhp 1.6 engines, I think its for the 307.

Best make to go for in my opinin is Valeo.
