My Edge only has an MPH speedo. Is it illegal to drive it in Europe without a KPH speedo?

Ford Edge - Driving in Europe - focussed

All vehicles registered in the UK since 1977 have been required to have a speedometer capable of displaying speeds in kilometres per hour (km/h) as well as miles per hour (mph).

You had better ask Mr Ford why yours doesn't.

I will most certainly be doing that. Not sure what they can do about it! Presumably a window sticker conversion table won't be enough.

The brochure of the "New Edge" shows km/h markings on the inner dial.

Which countries in Europe are you visiting?

As a Brit on family holidays I've driven something like 35k miles in France (mostly) Germany, Belgium and Spain since 1999. Nobody in authority has ever looked at my speedo.

As long as you know the mph equivalent of the limits posted in kmh and stick to them you'll be fine.

Oops. My mistake. There's a setting on the info screen that I finally reached which pops a KPH display inside the MPH one. Very neat. Sorry MR Ford for doubting you. Mea culpa. RTFM!

I run a UK spec Accord in France. It has the usual KPH markings on the inner ring of the analogue speedo - not that easy to read IMHO.

So, as the French government are going speed-camera crazy I have a small digital GPS speedo - handy little gadget, allows me to set the cruise control at just below the speed you get nicked at on their motorways.

Well said focussed, I was about to make the point about French police and their attitude to speeding. They are now very keen on upholding the law, not that they shouldn't be but previously they were a bit laissez faire about the whole thing. It must be a coincidence but since their economy suffered in the global crash of 2008/09 and Hollande realised there was no money for his socialist utopia, they suddenly realised what a cash cow the motorist can be. They wouldn't be so cynical, would they? Oh yes.

Now the OP can at least observe as close to the speed limit as his display allows.

Cheers Concrete

If your speedo isn't very easy to read for kph, get the smallest coloured sticky labels you can (I have some about 3mm in diameter) and stick them on the speedo at the 50kph, 70kph, etc marks. Dead easy to see next to the needle.

Yes I've done that on the two motorbikes I have that were UK sourced - I just didn't fancy doing that on a newish Accord!

Don't all stand alone satnavs have a speed display, don't quote me but i'm sure on some you can make the speedo display bigger even making it almost the sole display, much like the handy little gadget linked to above.

Much easier (and far more accurate) to read than the typical car speedometer.

If you have a smartphone, you'll be able to get a GPS-based app for speed indication. I have one for iPhone called simply "Speedometer". Can display mph, kph or kts!

Can't be bothered with a smartphone - I've just got a phone that you phone people on - a dimphone!

So have I, with bluetooth turned off. Cars and phones don't mix.

It depends, if your a tourist and you drive a car that is registered to another country if your only temporarily driving here its legal. However if the car is registered in UK and runnign on UK Plates its subject to the U.K. Construction & Use Regulations. One of these require viehicle to be fitted with working speedometer which indicates speed in MILES per hour.you can call here for more info.
