The D4 VEA motor is excellent in every respect, apart from the EGR cooler problem. Mine wil be getting its third replacement EGR cooler and valve next week, after 26 months and 23,000 miles.
Drivers that do high miles (i.e. 20,000+ per year) find it takes longer for the coolers and valves to gunk up, but it still happens. The type of fuel used makes no difference either.
Volvo claim to have a definitive fix now, but as it's taken them 3 years to work it out, I'm not confident that it is definitive.
