VW Scirocco 2.0 TSI DSG 2009-2010 - Car choice advice please!! - Oli Heath

Hi all,

I am going to buy a used VW Scirocco and have narrowed the search down to 2 cars, however I would really love some advise on which to get. here are the two links:

www.gumtree.com/p/volkswagen/vw-scirocco-2.0l-tsi-...0

www.gumtree.com/p/volkswagen/vw-scirocco-2.0-tsi-d...1

They are similar age/milage, they also both have full VW service histoy and almost immaculate MOT history. logic would therefore suggest to go with the cheaper, however there are a number of reasons not to:

1. the cheaper one has hidden their registration suggesting something to hide, he did give it to me in order for me to check the MOT. pictures are also limited and not very good, he has admitted to a very small dent hear the fuel cap (quoted at £80 to repair)

2. Very judgemental but the driver of the cheaper car seems a bit "boy racer" with a whatsapp username of "BISH BASH BOSH" and a picture of him and his mates covered in tatoos. I am a bit concerned its been thrashed about.

3. it is about an hour further to drive from me (4 hours total).

Still... £1500 is quite a bit extra to pay just for those points on a car which is a year older and only 3000 miles better off.

Please please please help!!

Cheers,

Oli

Lots of people hide numberplates in car adverts. Don't read too much into it.

I seem to recall that those engines NEED working properly, or else the piston rings don't bed in, and you get oil consumption problems. I'd rather one that's been worked properly, rather than pootled around.

However, the biggest issue to me would be the DSG gearboxes. Those are a bit notorious for problems. For those (and other) common problems, I'd suggest you go here :

There's a very short list of 'what's good', and a very long list of 'what's bad'. Still want to buy either of them ?

Rob is right, be very careful. Not the most reliable make/model and you're just getting into that age where everything starts to go wrong. £10 to 12K is a seriously large amount of money to drop on a used car 6 to 7 years old, particularly a private sale with no comeback if you buy a lemon. Sorry to be a bit of a black cloud, but I wouldn't want you to make a large financial mistake. Why not look at a used one from a VW dealer, or a good independant garage--- you'll have more comeback then. If you must buy private, make all the history checks and get a professional survey of the car before you buy.

Thanks for the advise. I have ordered a comprehensive AA inspection. I agree the DSG is a bit of a risk, but you dont get the reward/fun without a bit of risk ;)

If this falls though or the AA inspection shows up some significant issues then will probably revert to a VW dealer, If I was paying over £20k then i would definitely buy through a dealer, for £10k though, I would rather not pay the extra £2-£3k for going through a dealer... if that makes sence!

Interesting list but seriously? is that a joke? two goo points, Euro stars and discount parts?

I can understand all the negatives but its hard to take seriously when there are just two good points, they wouldn't sell a single car if those were the only decent things about it!!

This place is totally unlike any other motoring site or magazine.

HJ's reviews are scrupulously fair minded, if there are only two good points and many dozens of bad points that how it is.

VW used car buyers probably don't frequent this place too much (maybe they do after it's gone wrong), but there is no shortage of publications waxing lyrical about the product and will tell you what you want to here, waxing lyrical however won't make a silk purse out of a sows shell like, you asked the question here you got the truth.

I doubt any poster usually found lurking on this site would buy a used car well out of warranty with a DSG or similar gearbox (unless the car so cheap its a throwaway gamble, be interesting if any pipe up.

^^^^ please excuse the typo, hear not here, doh.

in mitigation i have been up at 0230 three days on the trot (lie in tomorrow, up at 0450), and we still have 4 x 8 week old cocker spaniel pups in the house, a miracle if you understood any of my recent utterances.

I would not buy any dsg type gearbox used car, even with a manufacturer warranty. too many implied excuses about "That is athe way they drive"

so no thanks.

and for the OP, tell us in a few months how you get on, but go to a dealer, any dealer to buy, as no inspection will reveal the state of the gearbox.

How do you feel about the possibility of a £2500 bill weeks later with no comeback.

Friend just sold his audi TT same mechanicals because of same fault!

that was the minimum quote, till it was stripped.

I would not buy any dsg type gearbox used car,

Nope, me neither.

I'd have one brand new only cos it's got a new car warranty. Otherwise I wouldn't touch one with a 10ft pole.

I've had both a VW and a SEAT with the DSG box, enjoyed both and had no trouble with the gearbox. I'd have another. But only under manufacturer's new car warranty or as a lease car.

As has been said. I wouldn't touch a 6 year old DSG-gearboxed car.
