Any gardeners on the forum please - it seems we have an infestation of Chafer Bugs in our fairly new (2 1/2 year old) lawn. I am told that the previous chemical treatments that were available to get rid of these creatures are no longer sold due to EU/HSE decree, and all that remains is treatment by Nemotodes which I understand is slow, uncertain and expensive.
With the wealth of knowledge and expertise on this forum we wondered if anyone might have any tips or suggestions as to what we might do ?
Thanks,
Notsure.

Sympathies !! Have been battling with them for about 4 years.
Have tried nematodes but only for one year, they have a 3 year life cycle which is at least how long it will take to get rid. So will have to treat for 3 years. As soon as you see the beetles hatching out of the grass and flying, treat with nematodes.
I also took the mower over to try and kill as many as possible before they laid eggs. Mentally satisfied!
Merit by Bayer now banned works, also Dursban from Dow also banned but I think they are trying to get something else licensed.
Have used merit for last 3 years, we also have loads of bees so it may not be killing them as they think.
Be prepared to lose your lawn, I lost 1/4 acre lawn, just picked it up and put in wheelbarrows.
Some have tried Jeyes on the bare soil, you will see the white grubs just under the surface.
Will soon reseed, Wilkinsons sell good loose grass seed at good price. Lawn is now fine.
Have now got it in the horse paddocks ... aaah!!
Good luck.

Provado Lawn Bug Killer ( Imidacloprid based) is currently advertised on Amazon, eBay, Homebase etc, supposed to be effective, but best applied April/May.

Regrettably I can only seem to find Provado Ultimate Bug Killer on the market which is not the same as Provado Lawn Grub Killer.
I believe this latter product along with Merit Turf was withdrawn by Bayer following EU decree a while ago, because there was concern (apparently unproven) that it was damaging to bees.
One of the 'benefits' of EU membership perhaps is that I will not have to bother maintaining my lawn anymore as I won't have a lawn to maintain - the Crows are currently digging up what is left of it to get to the bugs anyway !
But perhaps I had better not go there...
Thanks to those that have replied.
Stillnotsure.
