Just got back from Mexico and the driving there is amazing. The roads themselves in the Cancun area are pretty good but the speed limits appear to be put up for decoration. A bus ride is quite an experience, the drivers put the foot to the floor and swerve in and out with gusto. Pedestrian crossings are a bit of a mystery, seems if one driver stops for you then others will but it's a bit nerveracking. Traffic hurtles round in built up areas but the locals seem to manage very well. Taxis included Nissans with huge mileages driven very hard but they are a great advert for nissan longlevity.

we go to see family and friends in Jordan annually. In spite of the police cars parked on the "Kings Highway" (main road airport to Amman) Taxi drivers appear to be in an F1 race.

Allegedly Barack Obama was driven to the Airport By the King and remarked that it was fast.

Had you been in Saudi you might have been driving alongside a buch of lads going along on two wheels in a Landcruiser whilst their mates swapped the airborn wheels over for a laugh, at 50mph, or they might have been 'skiing' by hanging onto the rear doors and sliding along the carriageway on their sandals at up to 70mph...brilliant stuff, check out Youtube videos, make the Russians look tame by comparison.

Egypt was fun, old as the hills Peug 504 estate taxis going through town at near enough 80mph, the hotel bus was a cracker too, tyres with no tread at all but thankfully no canvas showing.

Egypt is terrifying. Cairo especially, all drivers aim for a gap that they assume will have opened up by the time they get there.

Out of town at night, most cars, buses and trucks drive with the lights off, flicking them on for a couple of seconds at a time.

Malta.

They drive on the shady side of the road.

I drove a fair bit on Gozo 4 or 5 years ago, it wasn't too bad. The roads made ours look fantastic though, potholes you could lose a small donkey in !

Moscow is an experience to witness. Roads of several lanes in all directions are used for overtaking , undertaking and speeding. Fines for speeding are low.

During busy periods though, traffic comes to a grinding halt and mile after mile of carriageway is blocked with expensive 4x4's, limos etc going nowhere. Moscovites seem to prefer sitting in jams for an eternity compared to the indignity of having to use the Metro.

Sadly none of that in Crewe, motorists are all too busy slowing down to invite other motorists waiting at junctions to join the main road, or dithering at roundabouts.....

I know we grumble at the standard of UK driving, but in the main its is pretty good. People do stupid things, but the majority do have a basic understanding of what is and is not expected.

Egypt. Driving with no lights at night and then flashing them if the driver thinks a car is approaching. Our 504 had an outboard motor fuel tank in the boot, not bolted down! It stank of fuel.

India. Might is right regardless of top speed of each vehicle. We had bus overtaking tuk tuk, overtaking moped, overtaking cycle on a road barely wide enough for the bus! We also saw a bus hit a motorbike and the bus driver expected money for the 'damage'! All buses in India appear to be crashed and bombarded with rocks as the last process in the factory.

Some interesting glimpses of driving worldwide, I hired a car on Malta and gave it back 3 days early due to nerves shot through.
