Car to seat 5 adults for 150m commute - jimmy_jazz

I now share a lift with 4 other people we drive one day each.

My bmw 4 series only has 4 seats so it looks like getting a different car.

Can anyone reccommend a suitable car?

The only one I like is the old shape Jag XJ tdvi possibly a 2007 shape but I'm not too sure what the reliability is like.

Try a Skoda Superb. You may be surprised how good it is to drive even without all the passengers. You'd get a much newer one than you would an XJ.

Alternatively you could look at something with 5 proper seats, such as a Citroen Picasso - but we don't know what your budget is and I wouldn't recommend a Citroen that was more than a couple of years old.

If that is a 150 mile commute then i respectfully suggest the OP looks for a new job or accomodation closer to it. I think the furthest I have ever "commuted" has been 15 miles.

What about fatigue, breakdowns, bad weather, and pure and simple a few "blocked roads" ( and perhaps falling out with the others...)

will they smoke in your car? (will you smoke in theirs?)

As you currently have a 4 series BMW, perhaps a 5 series or if you want a lateral thinking suggestion, A Hyundai 140 or Kia Optima 1.7 diesel. you should still get a kia with some warranty

XJ is lovely, but not without problems, HJ provided a list here www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/jaguar/xj-x350-2003/...d

The german saloons are not without problems as well.

For reliability (if you dont mind the looks) Lexus LS430 or LS460. They do get good MPG on motorway runs and can do mega mileages without issue if serviced. Transmission tunnel would drive me nuts though.

As you are only driving 1 day per week plus weekends, is MPG still a factor? I'd opt for a large 4x4 if it were me. I use my Discovery for long motorway trips and find it very comfortable and reliable, save for a recent slave cylinder problem which was a cheap fix. The lack of a transmission tunnel in the middle is great for middle passengers. As people will probably be up in arms at the suggestion of a Discovery, Japanese brands are worth a look at although significantly more expensive and (unless you go for an Amazon) not as nice to drive.

Or, Volvo S80

Wildcard: Chrysler 300C - Mercedes running gear in a comfy American package.

Id like to get a range rover sport but they cost too much money i didn't want to spend more than 10k thats why I looked at the Jaguar.

I would only drive it one day a week unless I get rid of the bmw. No one smokes.

Volvo V70 diesel would fit the bill.

XF is a lovely big car, one we considered last time but the list of things that can and do go wrong with the twin turbo 2.7 diesel is a long one. Had a friend that ran an XJ6 with the same engine who could tell you many a tale of woe. If you must have one then spend more and buy a later 2.2 or 3.0 or if you can find an early 3.0 petrol they're pretty trouble free and will touch 30mpg on a run (2.7 diesel will only be 6-7mpg better) but they're rare.

Big Volvo S60/V70 D5, BMW 520d, Audi A6 and Skoda Superb are all worthy options but they're still prone to all the usual maladies suffered by modern diesels. I'd probably favour the big Volvo as long as you avoid the PSA 1.6 diesel at all costs. The 5cyl models seem to be capable of mega miles without too much trouble and you'll get better value for your buck than the others.
