Mk4 V5 Golf - Cuts out when driving won't start again for 10 min - Anton1

Help I have a Mk4 V5 Golf after running for about 15 minutes the engine cuts out and the emissions warning workshop light flashes up. It then will not start again for about ten minutes. It then starts again fine but after a few minutes it does it again and takes another ten minutes before it starts again. Any ideas anyone.

Cheers.

You need to get a diagnostic test to see if there are any fault codes logged related to your problem. However ,from your description,I would hazard a guess at the crank/rpm sensor is at fault.A real challenge to replace on this engine as the wiring disappears under the inlet manifold and there is a lot of brittle pipework in this area that impedes access.

Thanks I forgot to mention that I had taken it to a garage to have it codes read but none were recorded. Will have a look at the sensor.

Cheers.

My mates one kept doing that but lasted over an hour before it started again, also had the same problem on a civic diesel, fault was not found untill it was put on live diagnostics showing rpm, trying to startup their was no rpm indicated but would suddenly come on then start.

each one was CPS intermittent failure. we think they were related to temp ie getting too hot, but not always the case....

I’m having the exact problem as described here & it’s been driving me insane.
I’ve long had an issue where the fan is on constantly and stays on 10 minutes after stopping and drains the battery, especially in cold weather, so I have to take the fuse out which causes trouble if stuck in traffic etc, and have to jump out & put the fuse back to cool the engine down. So I assumed it was that, or the alternator. However I’m told the alternator is still alright, giving out about 13.7 no load and 13.5V under load. So I changed the battery but it still keeps happening.
Today I noticed one of the plugs was not clean and covered with oxide. I assumed this might be the problem but as far as I know I’ve not had any misfirings.

So I went to look for the sensor described above. I wanted to buy one of these
rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww....4
Although the lead seems shorter than others eg
www.google.co.uk/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwiOi77Iz_LfAhX...=

Am I doing the right thing changing that?
ANY advice VERY GRATEFULLY received
I use the car for work every day so losing income with this drama

Edit: oh yeah I’m confused with the terms camshaft/crank/pulse etc hence not knowing if I bought the right thing
Any tips on fixing the fan problem also very welcome

Jim

Update

Fitted a new crank sensor. No more problems.

Make sure you get one with correct length leads. The one I got was too short

Yep. Crank position sensor. No fault code is typical (or not unusual at least)

Great. Replaced the crank sensor (had to remove the oil filter housing to get to the plug) and she's seems to be running okay again. Thanks for everyone's input.
