Capri Mk1 1600cc Kent Crossflow - Variable oil pressure for 1st mile - Vinnie

Hi all,
I have the 1600cc GT Kent engine, 103000 miles.
Have previously had rock steady 40psi at anything over 1500rpm, with 25psi at tickover. No problems here.

Now, for no apparent reason on my last 4 days I have had a VARIABLE pressure of between 40 to 5psi for the first mile, then it settles at 40 for the rest of the journey.
The variation of pressure between 40 & 5 has a cycle of about 15 seconds - imagine a 'sine wave'

The revs have no bearing on the pressure during this first mile. Seems to be only varying with cold oil.

Today I stripped the oil pump. All good condition, rotor clearances were well within spec. The two pressure relief valves in the pump housing were flushed with petrol, their springs were sound. Put in fresh Valvoline 20w/50 and new filter and the problem still there.

I don't know what to check now, does anyone have any ideas please ??

Thought I might check the pump inlet's oil strainer in the sump. Does anyone know if the sump pan can be removed without raising the engine please?

Thanking you, Vinnie.

I'm sure I once removed the sump of a Kent in an Escort in situ, but it may be different in a Capri and it was an awful long time ago.

I too was going to suggest checking the strainer, but you don't need to remove the sump to do this. Simply hire a top quality endoscope. Drain the oil and use the sump plug for access.

Electric oil pressure gauge or direct oil feed, can you temporarily fit an old oil fed pressure gauge to double check figures.

Hi gordonbennet,

gauge has a direct oil feed from a union in the block.

Another gauge is worth a go, have to see if I can get one.

Would air in the gauge feed pipe cause this? Can't see how air could get there though....

Cheers, Vinnie

Hi Cyd,

The capri has a frame member just below the pan. There is access to the bolts but imagine it could hit the strainer pipe.

The 'scope is a novel idea. There are baffles in the pan so may not be easy to view the strainer.

Best wishes, Vinnie.

Usually oil pressure problems get worse when the engine is warm!

I remember working on Capri's, Cortina's and Escort's of different vintages including the port side and crossflow kent engine.

If this were the Pinto engine I'd be worried about the oil pump hex drive shaft from the base of the distributer but I seem to remember (it's been while though) that the 1600 ohv pushrod kent engine has an external oil pump that has an oil pump drive that is directy fed from the cam shaft.

Oil filter has been changed - so it's not a blocked filer / emergency valve issue

Pressure relief valves seem OK - so probably not that (although they can be hard to diagnose and cause havoc)

The oil pressure gauge is on the end of a long very thin pipe - so lots to go wrong here including air locks, kinks, leaks . I had one fail - dumping oil gradually into the drivers footwell on a MK II Capri (slipery brake pedal!).Try a close coupled gauge to test actual pressure.

Summary - By the fact it can't be a hex shaft (pump hard to turn when oil cold) and it gets better when warm - i'd look at the oil pressure gauge first but beware sticky pressure relief valves. If it was something more sinister with the engine (big ends, main bearings etc) it would get MUCH worse when oil hot

Unlikely to be the oil strainer on this type of engine and on a Capri removing the sump without raising the engine usually difficult. It's snout (bonnet-ground) is vertically challenged. When building kit cars it was always recommended to fit a sump/oil pickup from a capri or petrol Transit as they had squater sumps

Hi All,

SUCCESS at last!!

I connected a master gauge into the block and it showed pressure varying - so gauge in the dash was OK after all.

Anyway, I put in 400ml of Wurth Engine Flusher, idled for 30 mins and drained out the sump.

As back as yer hat!

In with fresh oil and pressure goes straight to 40 and there it stays, apart from the usual 25psi at hot tickover. What a relief.

Will do another flush in a months time to make really certain it is all clear.

So, even after me cleaning out the 2 relief valves in the pump body it seems like that still wasn't good enough. Perhaps more crud got in after my manual cleaning of them.

Anyway, thanks to all of you for your comments and suggestions.

Really appreciate that.

Vinnie.

Sounds like partially blocked filter on end of pick up pipe.

At this point i'd not be happy until i had the sump off and checked that pick up filter for meself, it might still be caked in carbon.

Thanks for the update.
