Late 2013 50k miles mainly motorway hence less brake wear than normal day to day.

Dealer advising rear discs (and pads) need replacing. I challenged disc replacement as only 50k miles… After several discussions with the technician I picked up there may be a problem on models fitted with the electric hand brake which seems to grab the disc when driving..

My questions are 1) whether 50k miles reasonable time to replace brake discs? 2) whether others experienced similar on this model? 3) if early wear is unusual and caused by a sticking hand brake whether it should covered under warranty as a latent defect?

Ask them if they've measured the thickness on the discs and pads, and if so, what the measurements are.

A lot of manufacturers these days are putting in automatic replacement of discs and pads at mileages, and while that might be appropriate for some drivers, for others with more mechanical sympathy or gentler use of brakes it's just additional expense.

As an example, my BMW's onboard systems recommend front brake pad renewal at 30k miles. When the car was in for a service about then, they asked if I wanted it doing. I replied that I wanted to know the condition of the pads before I had them replaced.

When I collected the car that evening, they had put another 20k on the mileage until next check, as pads were still in good condition.

Extreme wear on the rear pads & disks was a problem with some cars - the early Jaguar XFs suffered from this problem. This would indicate parts dating from the the Ford ownership. HJ answered a query whwn a man was charged for rear disks & pads under 10K mls.

Volvo issues maybe related through the Ford parts bin??

10 years ago a son had trouble with his Lexus rear disks @ around 50K mark. Highlighted to him at a service - new disks fitted FOC & a partial refund on pads as new ones were fitted and the old ones were not fully wornout.

Lexus dealer was keen to point out that the 3 year warranty was comprehensive & only where items wore out were they charged. Different attitude to service than other brands - Maybe different nowadays.

Had a D5 V70 3 years ago. Nice car but discs went the same way as yours. After 50k miles they had quite a lot of wear due to underuse.

In my case I refused to use the horrible and superfluous electric handbrake so I might have been spared more problems.

The horrible and superfluous electric handbrake is not just a Volvo issue it applies to most modern large cars.
