Thanks, I'm finding it super hard to source a second hand engine though. Everyone I've spoken to so far says it'll have to be rebuilt for something this old.

Is there anywhere you'd recommend to look for a second hand engine?

And I guess there's no way of telling the dodgy rebuilders apart? The cheapest quoter has the best reviews so far funnily enough.

Under no circumstances should you go anywhere near an engine "reconditioners" in the Heathrow area. Also, keep well away from another one in Rainham, Essex. I won't name them on here because it might break Forum Rules on Naming and Shaming, but a quick Google shouldn't leave you in very much doubt as to who these people are!

But be very careful of reviews. One of these outfits, the Rainham one I think, has set-up a website full of reviews they've written themselves!

I've also heard good things about Ivor Searle. Certainly not the cheapest but I think, with reconditioned engines, you get what you pay for (if you're lucky!)

If you're looking for a second-hand engine it would be well worth checking what other vehicles your engine was fitted to. Might give you more scope of finding one.

I have used www.ivorsearle.co.uk/ they supplied an exchange engine to me a few years ago. They seem a very professional outfit. They do a lot of the machining in house. Proper "remanufacturing" as opposed to "bolt some good bits together"

Yes - I would go with searles - I went to their factory years ago and as an apprentice trained machinist take it from me they know what they are doing.
