04 Civic drive shaft problem ? - user111

Hi, I need some advice again.I got a 1.6l 04 reg civic, which has a slight leak on the outer cv boot and clicks slighly, but only on full lock at the moment.I took it to a garage and they said that the driveshaft is on its way out and that it makes more financial sense to wait until it gets worse before fixing it.What is the best money saving option here ? try and sell it before it gets much worse(would I even be able to sell it in that condition?) or wait until it gets much worser and then I guess replace driveshaft,cv joint, boot etc ?

Am I right in saying that it is not a serious problem until the cv joint starts clicking when the car is being driving in a straight line ?

Thanks again

For a real cheap and nasty job,you could get the cv joints swapped over side to side. This may give a bit more mileage before they need replacing. But is it worth it?

If the boot is split it needs changing for a new one.

regardless whether it needs a new boot or not, get some proper CV joint grease and some suitable cable ties...i can hear the howls of protest from the purists from here, the ones who say a proper boot clip must be used, which is fair comment but cable ties have lasted donkeys years for securing boots for me.

Righto, so repack both CV joints, hopefully you'll be pleasantly surprised by the lack of sound on full lock, you may well find they never need changing for as long as you own the car.

Its a mucky job but should only take you half an hour a side to do it, assuming the boot doesn't need changing., if its only seeping from a crease or pin hole repacking may well extend its life till it fails on an MOT at some point for split boot.

If i suspect the CV's have never been greased before i sometimes to this job as once in a blue moon preventative maintenance whilst for instance changing discs and pads.

I'd suggest the OP should ignore GB's advice, as they say: "I took it to a garage".

If you try to sell it with a clicking CV, the prospective buyer will probably try to knock something off the asking price and more besides as it'll look like it's had poor maintenance.

Do you want to keep this car? If so, have the CV replaced, perhaps at or before the next MOT.

As I recall they, like the rovers, dont last long once they start clicking and I think the CV kit around £50 ish depending where you go plus fitting

they are like rear wheel bearings on Honda or Rover, once they make a noise best to replace asap, as they dont last long

Secondhand shaft from a breakers would probably be easiest and cheapest.

They may even do the job for you if you ask, and cheaper than a garage would
