I know that Motorpoint asking prices are low and I have heard non negotiable, are their PX prices similarly low.

Depends on whether they think you are an easy mark, and whether they feel they will be able to sell your car easily or not - along with what work might need doing to bring it up to sellable condition.

Go onto WBAC or other sites BEFORE you go in, and find out what your car is worth on that. That will give you a decent guide.

Always remember though - the biggest negotiation tools you've got are your feet, and the door.

At the end of january i was looking to buy a used Kia Venga 2 1.4 petrol manual. (demonstrator)

Kia dealer car reduced by £1000 to match my budget as the car I went to look at was in the process of being sold.

Trade in £500 better than Mpoint, free full size spare negotiated and 3 yr service pack.

Use Autotrader or the HJ car finder for your model and then try a main dealer, unless it is rare.. dirtcheap... and check that it is UK supplied, Mpoints cars are sometimes grey imports) and if it is more than ayear old and not got a service stamp on time/mileage walk away.

There are bargains at Motorpoint, but be specific and don't let them flog you any useless extended warranties, and don't forget to refuse to pay the admin fee,

Bought 2 x Motorpoint cars - both new cars.

2007 - Xtrail - managed £500 off the price and the T/I was negotiated up £250. - So a £750 difference - the last week in the month - 1.5 hours to settle the deal.

2012 - last week of Sept - T/I the Xtrail for a CRV - - £250 more for T/I and £100 taken off for mats + full tank of Petrol. Set off it was registering full but 25 miles later it was less than full - i.e. it was maybe 50 litres in the tank and not the 58 litres. I did not pay their £99 transfer fee or their prep fee of £99 as the car valeting was not up to standard.

2015 - looking to change WBAC £14,600 - MP offered £12,600, showed offer of £14,600 & they moved to £13,600 but no more. I walked & hoped the phone would ring BUT no luck.

CRV is 100% so see need not change in a hurry - might buy an outgoing model when the 2017 cars start in a month or 2..... but I do not know what to buy.

I was offered £1k less than 2 other dealers for my car at Motorpoint, and a little bit of haggling resulted in me getting £1200 more than Motorpoint at a third dealer.

They don't seem to budge on their part ex prices, probably just want quick cash sales.

Motorpoint part ex - RT

Like any car purchase, price research is essential, of both new and old car to establish your reasonable "cost to change" - then negotiate hard remembering that salesmen are probably trained in negotiation.

It doesn't matter if it's a low buying price and low trade-in, or high buying price and high trade-in, it's the cost to change that matters - buy high with a low trade-in and you'd been done - buy low with a high trade-in ain't gonna happen!

I have found motorpoint offer the best part ex prices if your trade in is less than 18 months and 20,000 miles.

That is due to them having a policy that sells any part ex which is both 18 months of age or younger with less than 20k.

Motorpoint part ex - Alan

I should have said that I am looking to spend £9k with a trade in worth about 1£K.

Motorpoint part ex - RobJP

So they'll be putting your car directly into the auction, and hoping to get back roughly the same price as they paid you for it.

All depends on what sort of profit margin they've got in the car you're buying then. Lots of profit = possibility of higher trade-in. But only if you're very good at negotiations.

I am currently in negotiations with them to trade in my car. The vehicle that I am interested in is just over 6 months old and has done only just over 100 miles, which on further consideration has concerned me somewhat. I asked their salesman whether it was an import and he said no but he did not really give a fully reassuring answer on whether it had perhaps been in an accident or had perhaps a major mechanical issue. He said that it would have been a lease vehicle that had not been used although he did not know the reason why this had happened. He also stated that MP do a HPI check (the cost of which forms part of their admin fee) and that this was clear. I am going to test drive it later this week and will have a good look around to check its originality.

As far as the PX is concerned he offered me the same price as the initial Webuyanycar.com valuation and the new car looks to be such a good deal that I am inclined to go ahead if everything looks OK when I see it (it is being transferred by them to my local MP Branch).

Ask - in writing - as to whether the car has had major mechanical issues, or has been in a serious accident. Insist on the answer in writing too.

No answer = no deal, as far as I'm concerned.

As to them 'carrying out a HPI as part of the admin fee', just explain that it's quite all right, you aren't bothered if they do the HPI or not, so they can deduct it from their fee. After all, they sell you a clocked or stolen car, THEY are completely liable in law.

I doubt they would know.

they get batches of cars from manufacturers and hire companies, they will be unaware of the previous use of the car.

The imports tend to be fords, but not always as they get batches of fiesta's and ka's from hire firms and from ford direct who register them to make target - that could explain your 6 month old car with 100 miles.

never hade a problem with motorpoint but have found their prices are not always the best over the last few years - maybe their expansion to various sites around the uk has added a large overhead cost.

Motorpoint part ex - Falkirk Bairn

Motorpoint prices were keen - imports or ex day rent cars.

Lately I have noticed that some cars I have looked at have been edging up in price.

As I am looking at petrol autos 2+ litres the choice of models is somewhat limited - their prices seem to hold for 2/3 weeks & then they lop off £300, £500 o so.

They had 8 BMW 740's, <5k miles @ £33K, now £30K but they were still 8 the last time I looked - too big for me but it looks like they are still sticking - wrong outlet for many to buy a 7 Series petrol & wrong car / price for "|Motorpoint buyers" IMHO.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I now have an update on this.

Having obtained the registration number I contacted my local Audi dealer's service department and asked if they could confirm whether this car was UK supplied and who was the supplying dealer. They confirmed that it was UK supplied and gave me the name of the dealer. I then rang their service department and they told me that it had been registered at the end of March this year and had remained with them as a pre-reg for some time until they eventually shipped it out to British Car Auctions from whom Motorpoint must have purchased it.

I feel much better about the car's history now and will be going for a test drive later this week.

Thanks again for the feedback
