BMW 318D - Thinking of buying 318d - What to look for??? - Roy Brown

Hi, I have been offered an e90 shape 318d. The owner bought it as an ex-demo car when a few months old, it has has bmw service history up to 2013 then any work was done independently

It has covered 150k, what should I be looking out for upon viewing it in terms of mechanical problems specific to this model? It's registered November 2007 but unsure of build date

Cheers

been a few reports of turbos going between 65k - 100k miles. Also quite a few people seem to complain about low mpg which usually turns out to be faulty egr thermostats and/or glow plugs and there's also been a few who have suffered a fault with the DTC unit although BMW seem to have worked out a cheap fix for this (£140ish rather than £1400ish). Also the occasional head gasket too.

Also if it has swirl flaps they drop into the engine and create a lot of damage due to they just corrode. They can be removed but it can bring on the engine management light if you do get it i can remove the flaps and code out the engine management light.

Thanks for that Phillip. The owner doesnt really sound to be a 'car' person and said that if there was a problem, it was fixed. So i'll just keep my wits about me when viewing, cheers

First thing to do if find out which engine is fitted, 2007 could be 2 engines

Early cars M47 121 hp - older engine, no DPF fitted (exhaust points downwards), swirl flaps need removing as a precaution (as previous post), timing chain on front of engine, regarded as fairly bulletproof, first in production from 1998, higher car tax band

Later cars N47 141 hp - newer engine with DPF fitted (exhaust points outwards), no big swirl flap problem ? timing chain on back of engine (any problems and engine has to come out), has a history of chain problems due to lack of oil changes ? lower car tax band

Ths main thing with either engine is the frequency of the oil changes, BMW have CBS so it can be 20'000 plus miles before the oil gets changed, which is not good for the longtivity of the engine

Ideally the oil needs changing every 10k or 12 months whichever comes first, at the mileage on the car (150k) if the history is good it should had loads of life left in it

Have a look into which engine it has, check the history, if it makes all good, go and have a good drive then ,make a decision from there
