Just to apologise to all of you who rightly criticised an OP who failed to read the sticky thread and named and shamed a dealer. You'll all have got an automatic E-mail - sorry for that.

I simply don't have the time to go through all the posts and delete the dealer's name.

To the OP - a public forum like this is NOT the place to name and shame a particular business. THINK for a moment - this is only one side of the dispute, if dispute it is, and the dealer would have every right to sue for defamation idf the allegations were untrue.

As you know I'm not an aggressive moderator, but in future I'm just going to delete threads or posts that breach what I hope are reasonable guidelines on naming and shaming.

Shame, I rather liked the responses that myself and RobJP gave!

Didn't see any others.

Whilst to some degree (litigation) I can see why you have deleted the thread but to me it is ever increasinly hard to bring to the notice of others poor and despicable service by firms and in general speech itself which seems no longer to be free.

If HJ posts a disclaimer that any views expressed are not his own and that the poster himself accepts full responsibility then why not such posts?.

Bringing to public forum poor service may cause such firms to assess their imput to the paying customer. Otherwise they get away with it.

You have a good garage thread why not a bad garage one.

I'd agree with DVD here. The claims of the OP didn't stand up to any sort of scrutiny. It took me a matter of minutes to find the thread on PH, and that his posts had been deleted, and other posts on PH giving high praise to the garage in question - all of which I posted, and which gave a significant level of balance.

When the OP then saw red and went straight into gross insult mode, it just shot down any argument that he had as to him being 'reasonable' and the garage being 'snotty-nosed' towards him.

He showed his true colours quite quickly, and any reasonable person reading the thread would have seen that level of balance.

But I can also see why you feel you need to close down posts that criticise garages.

But it makes a bit of a mockery of a 'guide' for where to buy cars, get them serviced or repaired, if you only allow positive reviews, and delete the negative ones.

I agree with DVD and Rob and have said so on here in the past so I'm not going to repeat myself (and had posts 'pulled' for it).

I think the lack of 'balance' damages HJ's reputation, but probably only on here and not with the general public

But, hey ho, it's HJ's party. He can cry if he wants to.

On the subject of the OP complaining about "lack of respect" the first measure of getting respect is to give it.

On the subject of being ignored, I have been, when "dressed down" and unshaven and i have equally been well served under the same circumstances.

Having spent my working life customer facing I know how hard it is sometimes to keep emotions in check while giving good service AND trying to make a profit.

I have a cousin who is a multimillionaire and he went to his local Buckinghamshire Honda dealer having just finished gardening and was given a cool reception by the "crusty" owner who nonetheless sold him a car. I too had a similiar reception at the same dealers, but the car in question was too expensive for age/condition.

However a little courtesy goes a long way.

Happy Motoring all!

Fair points all, and I quite understand the logic of a balanced coverage of good and bad service.

But it really is purely the risk of litigation that is behind my caution. Assuming that the complainer isn't making the whole thing up, the likelihood is that there has been stroppiness on both sides. And a stroppy garagiste is likely to be defensive, particularly if it's a small business and he feels his reputation, such as it is, is at stake.

We did take legal advice when drafting the guidance on naming and shaming in the sticky thread, so people do need to follow this.
