Volkswagen Passat 1.6 TDI Bluemotion - Car Giant AA Warranty on Passat - Passat786

I bought a 2012 62 Volkswagen Passat 1.6 TDI S Bluemotion from Car Giant back in September 2015. Seemed a very good deal at the time and i even went a 1 year warranty with the AA through Car Giant for what they assured me was able to cover everything (a few lies put in there).

Within the first month the car had its clutch, flywheel and master cylinder etc. Replaced due to being too heavy, also the windscreen was replaced as it has split from the edge. This was all replaced through Car Giant with no problem plus I was given a courtesy car for a week with excellent customer service

Now however 7 months down the line, the car had started losing coolant at a quick rate. I rang Car Giant again who then put me in touch with the AA who covered my Warranty. The AA told me to recover the car at my own expense to Halfords nearby which i done so. Halfords then diagnosed it very quickly as a leaking waterpump and told AA they would new order a new one however they would not replace it without replacing the timing belt kit as this was standard practice when replacing the waterpump. The AA have point blank refused to do this saying they dont cover standard working practise (what crap is this?) And that if i had any issues with this to go and contact Volkswagen.

Do i have a leg to stand out as im now being forced to pay £220 (including there £50 excess) which wouldnt have even needed doing if the waterpump didnt leak prematurely. Bearing in mind these are not due till 140k accordimg to manufacturer and the car is on 103k miles.

What do you guys think?

I suspect £220 is a bargain price for a new timing belt kit including water pump fitted.

Judging by the reports usually seen here where aftermarket warranties are usually only fit for use in the smallest room in your house, you arn't doing too bad.

My only concern would be the make of the parts being used, and i'd rather have a main dealer or VW specialist doing the job for my peace of mind (i have no doubt the labour rates and type of garage were covered in the small print of the warranty you purchased), but the cost to you i think it's reasonable, sounds like they are covering roughly the cost of the pump and half the labour.

As for Car Giant, they have IMHO behaved impeccably, they sold you a warranty which does, to me at least, offer some reasonable cover.

I think getting the clutch replaced was an excellent result. I recall previous cases where clutches are excluded as wear and tear.
As for the current problem Halfords are right and the belt should be replaced. Presumably they would do the water pump without the belt if you sign to accept this is at your risk? I wouldn't take that risk myself especially as the belt is at 2/3 of its service life anyway. And at 140k/5 years you will need to shell out for a new belt and pump anyway - or would you risk keeping what will then be an ageing pump?
I can see where you are coming from but they are covering the part that has failed (pump) and the belt is a service item and no warranty will cover you this.
I suggest you look at it another way. If you are keeping the car long term then it would need a belt and pump anyway by 5 years. Doing it now you get the waterpump bit done for free (less excess).

Being honest having seen some of the people they employ I am not sure that I would be happy with having this level of work being carried out by Halfords and if it were mine and I was loooking to keep the car for any length of time I would stump up the cash myself and have it carried out at a main dealer or at least a "specialist" !

The Passat was not a new car when bought.

Great that you were able to get a few things done by Car Giant out of sensible goodwill-but as others have said-it's back to the same old story here of what a guarantee covers and what it DON'T.

Over and above servicing( which in reality is only a good check round, oils, top ups etc )any owner of any car over three years old MUST budget for consumables like brakes, tyres, exhaust, cambelts, water pumps, bulbs windscreen wipers, all MOT advisables....I could go on.

The good news-1- i reckon now you have sorted these Passat probs -you should have trouble free motoring for a year. After this- you will hopefully have your annual service and MOT done -and you will have built up a moderate budget to cover the bill!

Good news 2-I bet all this analyses out as being cheaper than your buying a new Passat in the first place.

Cheers!

I think Halfords' attitude is correct. If they replaced just the pump and, next week, the belt snapped, wouldn't you think "Why didn't they tell me it was on its way out?". In the circumstances, I think you're doing rather well. Get the wallet out.

I think Cargiant have behaved well,

But if you have not already done so pay halfords the extra to fit geunine VW parts, (ask aaa warranty about this) they can source them from vw and you pay the extra cost, or at least check the make of the parts they are fitting, and don't forget you will get a warranty on the work.

Mat not be exactly same VAG 1.6 but it cost just over £400 to get cambelt and waterpump changed on my 1.6TDi Skoda Roomster. That's main dealer price in Northampton. YMMV in cheaper areas of UK or if using an indy.

Routine replacement as cambelt was life expired and waterpump at same time was reccomended.

I agree with several posts here that Cargiant have been very good. The AA are obviously going for the cheapest fitting price, which is fair enough. As long as the fitter is experienced and careful this job should be routine. We all know the only real saving on service costs are the labour rates charged by dealers as opposed to indies. I would however insist that the water pump replacement and other parts are genuine VAG and not genegric. The water pump should have a metal impeller not a plastic one. Halfords would normally give a warranty on their work so you are covered there. Happy days. Cheers Concrete
