Nissan Primera 2.0 SVE P12 - Rattle that dissapears when clutch pressed in? - mattprince

Hi,

I have just bought a 2004 Nissan Primera 2.0 SVE (P12 model) and just noticed that when in neutral and out of gear, there is a slight rattle coming from the engine bay. WHen i depress the clutch it goes , and driving i cant hear it either. Read on google and some people are saying it is a clutch bearing (this is on other cars so dont know if its the same) If thats the case, not happy and would probably go back to the garage i bought it from and kick off.

Failing thrust bearing is a traditional diagnosis for a rattle that goes with foot on clutch.

The car only has 58k miles with full service history. 1 owner from new. Could it fail that early?

Since you don't know how the previous owner drove it, then yes it could fail at that mileage, or less if it was abused.

If when you put enough pressure on the clutch pedal to feel some resistance the rattle disappears then it's the thrust bearing, if it persists then it's coming from the gearbox and the most likely cause is the layshaft bearings.

Its definitely the thrust bearing then. Only bought the car 2 days ago for £1350 and was described as "immaculate, low mileage, amazing condition blah blah" and I bought it from a dealer. What chance do you think i would have of getting my money back as its not fit for purpose and misdescribed?

Since October 2015 you have 30 days to reject substandard products and get full refund - inform the dealer in writing that you're rejecting it under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 but don't use it after that.

Thanks for that. I paid in cash so hopefully when i ring them tomorrow and tell them i will be bringing it back, with it in writing, they will give me the cash back.

To update , i have just checked the oil level in the car and it was below minimum. Hoping that was the problem , I have just put some oil in and ran it for a few minutes and its still the same. Can't believe a dealer didnt even check the oil level of the car. Now i know he was in a rush and was closing soon when i was viewing the car.

Only if:

The quality of goods is satisfactory if they meet the standard that a reasonable person would consider satisfactory, taking account of—

So, where does a £1350 12 year old car which works but has a "slight" rattle come into that?

I am afraid this is classic symptoms of DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel) failure

Expensive repair - either reject or get fixed under warranty

Oil level irrelevant for this

I think you'll struggle for a rejection at this price range.

A good simply has to be of a "standard a reasonable person would think satisfactory" and what we basically have here is a cheap banger which makes a slight noise in the engine bay it didn't have when new. A reasonable person would expect a £1350 car to be significantly inferior and have worn out bits in many peoples' view.

If the car is basically working then it is fit for purpose. You've already said it drives fine.

I suppose it depends exactly how loud it is. If it wakes the neighbours up then maybe fair enough but a rattly DMF could go on for anoher 50k or more and from your description it doesn't sound too bad anyway.

Comeback at this price range is in practice quite limited.

Its a car that is at least 11 years old. Surely some things you've got to accept as being slightly worn such as this rattle. Where do you draw the line?
