2001 Mondeo 2.0 Duratec HE - Using oil, smoking exhaust, irregular idling - Clay

Please help!

My 01 2.0 Duratec HE Mondeo is struggling. Bought it a couple of weeks ago, noticed its got a few engine issues.

Symptoms:

Consumed 2.5 litres of oil over 400 miles, varied speed and roads

Stutters while idling at 900 rpm but only when warm. Idles at a steady 1400 after starting.

Slightly smoking exhaust. Didn't notice for ages as it's only pronounced at 4000+ rpm, then gives a bit of a puff when lifting off.

Notes:

Bodged repair to split in PCV/air filter outlet joint

Drives great

Slight rattle when accelerating, but I've hear this is a seperate valve-related issue, probably fixable at the same time?

Oil very dirty

Valve stem seals, rings and PCV all mentioned as possible causes. Can anyone shed some light on the situation?

What mileage has it done? Are there any oil leaks from the engine (if there is an undertray below the engine check on that).

2.5 litres per 400 miles is over 1 pint per 100 miles, back in the fifties and sixties this was usually a sign of seriously worn bores, (unless pools of oil were left when parked.)

110k, no leaks

Glazed, worn bores.Gummed up oil control rings.Whatever it is ,not worth doing on a car this age.

Probably worth giving it an oil and filter change to see if it improves the oil useage, it it's running on cheap nasty low spec oil, some decent oil might help give it a good cleanout, free up the rings etc.

I would try one of the "seal expander" additives. The valve seals are probably worn and that may help. (for a while)
