Charity Collection Sacks - Henry the 9th

For years these have been coming through our letter box at a rate of two or three a week. Now it is down to two or three a month. Is this because of the general downturn in things generally such as output in China?

Before anyone asks "Aren't two or three a month enough for you?", the answer is "Yes". It is simply a subject in which I am very interested.

Various reasons i should think, though i know next to nothing of charities, other than those who work for them in the growing higher rungs are doing rather well thanks.

People able to sell their unwanted clobber to rag collectors for cash, the whole rag game oversubscribed and a general populace having reached saturation point with being made to feel guilty via the telly/newspaper/radio/motorway urinal propaganda bombardment...those are a few off the top of my head, personally i'm fed up to the back teeth with every man and his dog wanting whats left in my ever thinner wallet that the goverment haven't filched before i saw it.

GB, I share your view on charities, as well as the flow of junk mail begging letters, TV ads and 'chuggers' in the town centre, we occasionally (as a change from Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses) get charity collectors knocking on the door in the vain hope of getting me to sign up to monthly direct debits.

So far, I have refused politely but don't guarantee this will always be the case.

Its a shame that we can't charge them 5p for each plastic bag they shove through our letter boxes just like the shops do!

Hasn't there been a recent expose about extent to which commercial outfits have hidden behind small donations to charities or funding for charities of dubious repute.

We use them to line the k****** bin.

".... in the vain hope of getting me to sign up to monthly direct debits."

Some charities just don't get the message that this is a thoroughly unpleasant way to go about fundraising. Lots of people are prepared to give cash, but don't want to be cajoled into signing up for something that in an always uncertain economic climate they may not be able to afford later on.

I'm proud to do some work for the RNLI (I'm treasurer for a big annual fair in north Dorset). We have house-to-house collections and a flag day, but we simply ask for cash, and we get it as we're apolitical and uncontroversial.

Should have said I'm not a total Scrooge, certain charities which do good work we do support, RNLI is one, Yorkshire Air Ambulance is another, there are a few others, mostly small, local and without six-figure executives.

Here in rural Kent we actually get a couple a month. All for quite worthy causes. We don't mind donating as it saves us bining it or delivering to the charity shop. Charities are like many other fields of activity, with good, bad and indifferent. Like Avant I was the treasurer for our company donation scheme. Won't bore you with the details but we carefully selected the charities we gave to. The problem with adverse publicity is that it effects all charities, not just the bad ones. Shame really. The British are a superb race for supporting these causes and we should be proud of our compassionate nature instead of cynical about where all the money goes. I just wish the Charities Commission would be more active in policing activities. One can hope. Cheers Concrete

Thank-you all for your interesting replies to my question.

Too many through our letterbox. Straight into the bin, unlooked at.

Good comments but how about this--my wife has dutifully filled these sacks on occasion and put them outside for collection.

Next thing she knows is she is called by a parish councillor ( 15 miles away) and accused of dumping!

The collectors had either got bored and fly tipped the lot--or filleted what they wanted from their sacks before chucking over the hedge. She was furious to be accused of fly tipping --but luckily the parish councillor was across it and guessed that bag collectors were to blame!

No more charity sacks in this household any more and we tell everybody to be aware and beware!

or filleted what they wanted from their sacks before chucking over the hedge

I used to give clothes in the sack untill I had to take someone to my doctors, a van that collected the filled plastic bags, stopped in the same road with an estate car reversing up behind the van

both drivers got out and went through the clothes and the good ones were thrown in the estate car, without the plastic bags, the rubbish was thrown over into someones back garden and they drove off at speed

These were charity bags as they had the name of the charity on them, since then I only give to RNLI and heart foundation.
