Nissan Almera Tino SE 1.8 Manual - Some advice on buying used Nissan Almera Tino SE - BillDoors

Hi, i'm going to view a used 2004 Nissan Almera Tino SE 1.8 later this morning and was looking for some advice on what to look out for then looking over it, test driving it. I borrowing some of the money to buy it so, a little nervous about buying a poo box.

With any car of this age (12 years old now) condition and evidence of service history is important.

Things I'd be looking for:

Does it start easily from cold, any blue or white smoke in the exhaust

Where is the clutch biting point, any evidence it's worn or slipping

Clunking or other alarming noises from the suspension

Any corrosion

What does it look like under the bonnet

What evidence of service history is there?

When was the cambelt (assuming it's a cambelt engine) changed?

Is there enough oil and water in it (best checked when cold if possible)

What do the tyres look like - any uneven wear?

State of the brake disks

It's been valeted which shows the vendor is at least trying

All this said, it's a £600 car so it won't be perfect. I'd advise you to budget at least a few hundred quid for sorting out any bits that may come up - eg brake pads may want changed, alignment of wheels, a tyre or two, etc.

The guy has been posting for 4+ years on Gumtree and most likely a car dealer from home, as he has the paper as a floor mat.

It seems a bonus, it has DAB as even new Nissan Qashqai (up to 2013/4) don't seem to have it. It could be an after market product.

The clock says 124000, but there is a risk in the past, it may have been clocked. You needd to check the history for any holes.

You can't see the number plate, so you need that to check the history.

Generally Nissan have been good. This model is from 2000 to 2004 series, certainly developed beforethe influence of Renault.

When you start it up from cold, it will be high revs, but after the car has warmed up, it should sound smooth.

Also, check for engine warning lights. The key issue is the cambelt (chain), if it has been done, then you know a big expense has already been covered.

It looks like a good find, but you won't know until you get see it in the flesh.

The listing's now showing it as sold.

I'd add timing chain to steelghost's list. These engines are known to have a problem with it stretching and it's an expensive replacement. So if the OP's still looking at Tinos I'd suggest he checks the service history and listen very carefully for chain rattle when the engine's cold. Walk away from any one that's been 'warmed up' before you arrive.

Had mine for 2 years (54 plate) bought with 60k on the miles and now on 92k.

Mine had full service history which is key with this nissan engine, its got a small oil sump 2.8ltr so oil changes are key (as they are in any car). Known problems, air bag light coming on from loose wires under the passenger seat. easily re-set by turning the ignition 5 times and then starting after the airbag light goes out (if it stays on, go to your garage!).

The ignition loom wiring is too short (known problem), so when the stearing lock is on, it can cause the NATS system to disable the car from starting, a giggle with the stearing wheel usually sorts it out, problem comes and goes.

The car has been really good to me so far, just usual wear and tear. No problems starting in the cold, solid engine, get around 33mpg from her. Lots of space. A well serviced one will do you just fine.

Yes, the chain on this gets expensive.

I don't have cash for a replacement vehcile, and had to get a chain fitted on mine by my local good garage. Thick end of £800...

Amongst the other items other posters have said you should look for, I would check the government's MOT check website (free) to see it its had several major failures (problems such as major corrosion, electrical problems, emissions, steering/suspension) that could be a guide to future ownership issues. Some, like rust/corrsion (especially of major structural elements) won't go away and will get worse (i.e. more expensive to patch up) until they are unrepairable or uneconomic to repair.

[update] I did notice that the ad does not include a photo showing the registration plate in full, so you'd have to see it in person to run the MOT check. It might be already sold as the headline car description says "Nissan Almera Tino SE MOT 30/04/2017. SOLD"

Bear in mind as well that car manufacturers are only legally obliged to keep making spare parts for cars for 10 years after the car goes out of production, which in this model's case is this year - you'll probably be ok for a few years after, but availability will probably be reduced and the prices of the spares will go up and take longer to become available to fit - which could mean the car being off the road for more than a few days if you're unlucky - no 'Almera Tino drivers clubs' around to help onwers in that regard I'm afraid.

If it's anything like my (year)2000 Primera then it could be a good buy. I've owned the Primera for 9 years and it's sailed through each MoT. It's cheaper to own than my wife's 2005 Clio and parts - both Nissan & pattern - are readily available. I'm hoping it will make it to 2020. I wish I'd bought it new.

The 1.8 petrol engine was also used in the P12 Primera. So all the same good/bads.

The main issue is ensure that oil is changed regularly.
