Volkswagen Polo IV - Main Dealer Discount on Used Car? - csgmart

I've never previously bought a used car from a main dealer (had plenty of new cars in my time though). I'm looking at a 2011 VW Polo 1.4 at a main dealer. Car has done 34,000 and is up at £7,000. As a cash buyer do you think the dealer would be prepared to entertain a discount?

Looking at private I could probably get a similar car for just over £6,000 - say £6,250. The same car at a non VW dealer would be around £6,500.

So, do main dealers discount and if so what can I realistically expect off the price? I guess timing comes into play? If someone is looking to hit their monthly or quarterly target then I might get a deal?

Anyway, I'd prefer to buy from a dealer and VW seem to offer a pretty good 12 month warranty on used cars so I'm leaning towards them but I like a bargain too...

I'd be interested in your thoughts on this please.

You're paying extra (not excessively so) for peace of mind and better protection under consumer law than if you bought privately. Discounting will depend on how easy the dealer thinks the Polo will be to sell, and how long it's alrteady been on the forecourt.

Try offering £6,500 at the VW dealer and see how you get on. The dealer must think it's a good 'un as main dealers often trade out cars which are out of warranty.

Car pricing is down to the level of negotiating skills - salesmen are trained professionals, customers aren't. It's an uneven match that some customers are better at than others.

IMO too many buyers have this concept of a "fair" price but in reality there's no such thing - the salesman wants to deal at the highest price, the customer wants to pay less.

I recently bought an expensive car, list price about £55,000 including a big chunck of options - my p/x was worth £10,500 to WBAC - now some people would have been happy paying the £55k and getting £11k in p/x, net £44k - others would have taken the £5k discount offered by my local dealer and accepted £10k p/x, net £40k - I got an online brokers deal at £45k with £10.5k from WBAC, net £34.5k - others have done better than me, all down to negotation skills.

M3 advertised at £54K with ~ 1,000 miles on clock.

Trade-in was a Cayenne - WBAC offered £34.5k (less their deductions at point of sale), BMW dealer offered £31K

To change BMW dealer initially wanted £54K- £31K = £23K

The young car buyer wanted to pay a lot less. Drove 400 miles, there & back, to negotiate a better deal. The dealer moved but was still too high. 10 days had passed and the buyer sat on his hands.

£17K was the final cost to change when the Dealer Blinked and almost agreed to the buyer's cost of the change (£16K) - sometimes silence is louder than shouting!

The car makes a hang of a noise when it starts - not so good for his neighbours as he leaves for work @ 6.30 ish daily to beat the traffic (20-25 mins early on, 60mins+ leaving after 7am)

I would always go the main dealer route, you will pay a small amount extra, but its not that much extra and when thing go wrong you stand more change of get a good out come.

Discount wise you really have to show that you could purchase a local car in the same condition for less.

Cash purchase it not going to help as the dealer will not get any commision on selling you credit.

Another thing a dealer may do is throw in some 'sweeteners'. Buying my Roomster I got a full size spare wheel/tyre together with jack etc to replace the OEM goo+pump combo. And some proper Roomster badged mats too.

Assuming you are happy with the test drive and vehicle seems to fit the bill then this is all about successful negotiation.

The process is to avoid talking final price AT ALL until you have found out what the VW price includes....car insurance ( i doubt it ) a years tax?( i doubt it), paint insurance( ??!!) (I doubt it), free service after a year( I doubt it), the silly black bag of car cleaning products which notionally costs another £200 (yes-it's true!). THEN your question would be "what would be the cost to change"...remember that question cannot be answered without sales giving you a notional figure for a part exchange( if you wanted it) -even if you didn't you are getting them to believe you are a serious buyer and forcing them to show their hand !

ALSO-I would get it's number plate and do an MOT history check to identify any advisables. Get all these( if any) into the negotiation too!

Cash deffo helps-by the way--as does doing this today( end of the sales month?)

Let us know how you get on....of course if in any way you feel uncomfy or unhappy-just walk away...several times sales people have rung me a day or so later to ask if I had any further thoughts ( which translated means --"the car is still for sale-and we have identified you as a potential serious customer)

Good response. I do have the option of taking 'advantage' of VW's own finance which comes with a £500 contribution towards the deposit (effectively reducing the price by £500) and a couple of other sweetners thrown in. If I go this route (which also includes 2 free services) I could pay the finance off 1 or 2 months later.

I would ensure that the cam belt is replaced as part of any deal - that's non negotiable for me.

Volkswagen Polo IV - Main Dealer Discount on Used Car? - Bromptonaut

The free services with finance thing seems to apply across the VAG group, I got same deal on my Skoda.

Volkswagen Polo IV - Main Dealer Discount on Used Car? - FoxyJukebox

Very good point re the cambelt--if i was really fussy-i would sniff out as to why it was NOT replaced after 4 years anyway?...Also-I take it the car will be properly serviced to VW specs prior to delivery? By that I mean a service and not a "300+ point check/or whatever" which is sales talk for "not bothering with a service because a service is not due!".

Finally--have a glance --if you can- at just what service history exists....I would be ever so slightly worried that this vehicle --with a lower than average mileage--just might have had only the very minimum of service interval attention. Why do I ask you to do this?-there are sometimes service "advisables" available to view that would not be included on the MOT history advisables.

Finally--on your pre-delivery service-get an undertaking that anything "service advisable" is carried out. Best to get it done then and there. If they won't "pay" --pay yourself, make sure the service book is stamped and absolutely insist on getting accompanying paperwork/receipt/work sheet/checks etc...which VAG always should do after one of their services

One for Bromptonaut. What do think of your Roomster? If we need to tow a caravan I was looking at a Yeti. If we decide not to buy a caravan then the Roomster looks like a very useful vehicle. Your comments would be appreciated. Cheers Concrete

After 4months I like the Roomster a lot.

As you may recall from previous posts it was bought in a 'distress purchase' scenario after my 2005 1.9D Berlingo acquired a steering fault apprently only curable with several rounds of expensive parts bingo. Dealer purchase 4yo with 70k on it and a tad under £5k. SE version in black with a panoramic glass roof.

Engine is a 90PS diesel (VAG EA189). Drives like a proper diesel with low end pull and a handy walking pace creep idling in first. Nicely speed stable and quiet and relaxed at m/way cruise speeds. 5 speed manual box is sweet and precise.

A few external dings but nothing inside gives a clue on mileage and everything works as it should. Loads of space for four with some fore/aft and rake adjustment on outer seats. The centre one is less good - not a full seat like in the 'lingo but it does old down to form a table. All three fold and can easily be removed for max loadspace. Not quite an estate car as boot has a lip.

Driving is a mix of my 15 mile round trip to work and longer distance stuff includin uni runs to Liverpool - a 300mile round trip. According to the fuel app on my phone it's averaging 47mpg. 50mpg+ easily attainable on a run provided you keep under 70 - don't know if it's aerodynamics or just plain vanilla physics but consumption falls of a cliff if progres is being made at 80mph or more!.

I don't think you question suggests you want to tow with it but if you do it's max is around 1200kg. It could manage our Elddis Xplore 304 but we won't be trying it.

That is good deal csgmart, well done you. I agree with other about the dealer warranty being quite an attraction. Also if the car has VW FSH then some goodwill may be forthcoming in the event of a catastrophe.

A few points

1. VW dealers can have an attitude problem
2. VW don't generally do good will even with full service history
3. £7k for a 5 year old VW polo seems very expensive, try putting the reg into glass guide or We buy any car and see what they consider its value to be

Excellent Idea. I always found that when purchasing a car, sales people love the idea of making commision on finance and therefore giving you some room to push the deal. Just push back on any one off charges for the finance
