berlingo 2.0 hdi 2004 - intermittent fault. - blingo bongo

hi all.

i have a problem with my berlingo 2.0 hdi 2004.

it runs great, quite pokey for a diesel, no problems at all except it's a poor starter in winter, but i've just fitted a very heavy duty battery (had to midify the battery tray and re-locate a few things!

this problem has existed for a few years (long before battery change).

basically..

drive to somewhere, if engine not cold before starting, it starts fine but after a few revs, behaves like no fuel reaching engine and then is ok but goes into limp mode, sometimes reset after a few restarts, sometimes not.

more common in warmer weather.

i now have a scan device permanently connected so i can clear faults and get out of limp.

garage scan said it was a fuel issue - something i had allready discovered from the codes i had seen.

code - P1198 Pump rotor control Underfuelling - SID801 - Diesel high pressure monitoring. Flow regulator at stop.

one mechanic said 'might need new fuel pump' whic i doubt as it runs so well.

i also doubt a fault in the fuel regulator as it runs so well at all speeds.

any ideas? i thought maybe a sensor? but which one?

thanks!

p.s. i really don't want to pay a fortune for an 'expert mechanic' to change various parts until it works!

Any basic service items replaced? Fuel filter?

If its an 8 valve hdi the pressure regulators on the back of the HP diesel pumps give problems, they have a very fine mesh filter which clogs, I have had no success with cleaning them but you can get second ones from ebay for not to much money.

Is it possible you have a very minor air leak on one of the fuel pipes?

berlingo 2.0 hdi 2004 - intermittent fault. - blingo bongo

hi there, i've seen that mentioned elsewhere but i don't see why it only has this problem after driving for a while and re-starting before fully cooled down.

i will look into it, but have no idea how i will find a tiny leak on a load of dirty pipes!

thanks.

Look for air bubbles in the pipes, and a priming bulb that never gets hard after priming.

It could be your diesel temperature sensor. I've seen this problem on a couple of Peugeot 307s with the 90bhp 2L diesel engine. A code is logged but no EML on.

Google "Peugeot Planet Map" to find a UK network of Peugeot / Citroen owners with the decent diagnostic equipment, there should be someone near you who'll be able to help.

thanks gibbo.

not seen any bubbles, i've often jumped out and popped the lid to check.

bulb gets hard, doesn't lose pressure, in fact, once i squeezed it too hard and forced diesel through the seal on top of filter housing.. i re-tightened the housing after that.

diesel temp sensor.. will look into that... i changed a temp sensor a while back, where is the one for diesel?

p.s. sorry, did i mention i'm in spain? Peugeot Planet Map indicates nearest person is in malta!

hi there, i unscrewed the regulator and tested it, resistance correct, etc, didn't see a mesh filter! is it really small and inside the threaded part the regulator screws into?

p.s why would this only be a problem after a journey and re-starting when engine not completely cold? did it again today after a 100 mile drive and a 10 minute stop.

thanks!

hi there, thanks for the reply, yes, changed twice in past year!

See if your scan tool can read live data in graph form,

and graph the coolant temperature sensor and the fuel rail pressure.

On mine I'd have it in flight recorder function,

that way it can be scrolled back to check for clitches in the pattern.

sadly, it cannot read in graph form, i have given up on a dispute with the maker i bought it from who said it did!

the european spec 2004/2005 blingos weren't fully scan compliant with new laws - they got away with it by saying the vehicles were vans, not cars, and law stated 'cars' !!

i get what you are saying about coolant temp vs fuel pressure.. i even changed the coolant temp sensor for new a while back.

thanks for your reply - so musch more useful than on another forum where i was advised to 'take it to a garage that knows what they are doing'!
