... or the relative paucity thereof.

Here's a suggestion: prohibit 'smart' phones from the workplace.

In recent years I've worked with a fair number of people who quite literally spend the majority of their working day tapping away on their 'phone. Multiply it up across the UK and it must make up some of the productivity shortfall.

If said phone sponges were working for an exploitative employer I wouldn't mind, but these are relatively well-paid white-collar staff. I wonder what the cost to British industry of Social Media is.

So before social media productivity was higher? Or people found other ways to avoid work?

I suppose it's difficult to compare like with like since so much has changed through the years: automation, the move from a manufacturing-biased economy to a service-industry economy with low-paid McJobs, automation and the computer revolution in the office. The de-unionisation of the workplace. But it's never been so easy for lightly-supervised office staff in particular to goof-off while appearing to be working.

It's ALWAYS been easy for lightly supervised office staff to 'goof-off'.

The mobile phone has been a great enabler for getting people into the workforce. 'Latch-key' kids can be supervised. Even in teens ringing a parent at the office with need to go through switchboard or perhaps have a direct dial number picked up by a colleague is an ordeal. The family Whatsapp OTOH allows everybody to keep in touch.

It's all a matter of proportion.

It's probably no worse than the amount of productivity lost to smoking breaks.

When I was young I worked in a factory where some old bag of a supervisor and her 2 favorite girl workers would spend 20mins pers hour in the womens toilets on a smoking break, then she tried to berate me for talking to a co worker for 1 minute. She was not happy when I pointed out that for every hour of the day we were losing 1 man hour of work due to her smoking party.

Why worry, the bosses of these companies seem to have unlimited money to burn, the government just print more when they've frittered the last lot they took from us away, presumably the housing bubble on which the whole ponzi scheme is based will cure all ills cos it can only continue to expand, what could possibly go wrong?

When I was young and worked in factories and offices, everyone smoked while they worked, so it wasn't reducing productivity.

Apart from coal mines and petrol refineries, this was the case everywhere till elf and safety campaigns succeeded in getting it banned (except in jail!).

I worked in an electronics factory and most of the production area was a clean area so smoking, drinking and eating at the work stations was forbidden. We used to wear 'bunny suits' not to contaminate the area with skin or hair etc. These days this type of electronic production is done inside factories where there is no humans in them to contaminate the production line.

I was involved in working with sensitive equipment. The place had a man and a dog. The man was there to feed the dog. The dog was there to stop the man touching the equipment.

Was the dog allowed to smoke?

Only if he could get the man to light his fag.

Ever seen a dog use a lighter?

UK Non productivity?--just watch a 20 minute utility repair being done on a pavement.

!) Utility company arrives 07.50.

2) traffic management arrives with signs, yellow fencing and other such necessaries-08.25

3) Road surfacing company arrives and starts digging hole-11.00

4) 12.00-Utility company begins and completes work within the hour.

5) Road surfacing company return and fill in hole--but do not "tar" - 15.00

6) All traffic management and signs remain in place overnight. Road surfacing company return at 11.00 am the next day. Job completed in a half an hour.

7) Traffic management then assigned to clear roads--they may do this the same day or the next.

If that was Hong Kong the whole lot would have been done less than 20 minutes by a multi tasking chain gang....
