All makes - electric or hydraulic power steering ? - Steveieb
With the introduction of electric power steering now almost universal, what are the benefits, downsides of both types ?

And do any new vehicles still fit hydraulic power steering ?

Advantage of electric is cheaper manufacturing costs. Disadvantages are steering doesn't feel so nice (thats my opinion of course).

My last 2 BMWs have had electric power steering.

Initially (on a 2008 1 series), I wasn't sure. It felt weird/wrong, and took some getting used to.

Now (2013 3 series) it really is indistinquishable from hydraulic PAS, in my opinion.

Advantages / disadvantages ? Little difference in what can go wrong (pump in old, electric motor in new), no fluid changes (so saves money on maintenance), the motor only runs when needed, as opposed to the pump running continuously (so should be less likely to fail).

Electric power steering

1. Uses less power from the engine hence more efficient.

2. Simpler system - does away with pump and fluid so lighter.

Hydraulic power steering

1. Traditionally they have better feel, although I don't know if electric systems have improved now.

Many cars now include Normal/Comfort/Sport options on steering which artificially stiffens it to simulate hydraulic like characteristcs.

Personally I'm not bothered. Just leave it in normal mode and forget it. Setting to Sports mode does make the steering feel heavier.

Hydraulic is old tech, electric motor is new tech.

What about electrically driven hydraulic pump systems?

Never knew they existed until I saw one on an old Saxo. Does the motor run continuously, or just when the steering wheel's turned?

I don't think it matters IMHO as long as the systems are working properly.

I've got 2 out of 3 vehicles on electric - good feel- never a problem.

The other is on engine-pump hydraulic, that's not a problem either!

I quite miss my hydraulic plunger washer pump from my 69 mini. That had a nice positive feel to it!!

On one of the British Leyland cars I had, it was so positive that the whole plunger disappeared into the dashboard.

Electric power steering allows 'additional' functions, self parking/driving, compensation for vehicle drift, etc. Another aspect is it's use in electric and hybrid vehicles. Electro hydraulic could be used for these but it would add additional service requirements.
