I'm going to be a bit more nuanced than Rob.
Until a fairly recent change in the law, the advice was often to ignore anything but a parking ticket issued by a local authority.
There is still a possibility that ignoring the OP's parking charge notice may be OK - I did so not long ago and it was the last I heard of it.
If the OP has just a ticket that was attached to his windscreen he may wish to wait to see if there is a follow-up in the mail. However, I would refer NOW to pepipoo.com, in particular to this page: tinyurl.com/zhhkjxz, where there is a discussion on this very subject.
A statement in one post says this: "My view is that we advise everyone to appeal; POPLA is delivering over a 50% success rate so half of appeals are closed straight away; the remaining 50% wont all go to court because they will cherry pick the less well argued cases and not risk being stuffed later on."
Rob is spot-on with one point, however: gather your evidence NOW - lots of photos to show what you are claiming - inadequate signage.
To summarise: decide whether you're going to fight this (some or all of the way); if you are, appeal and then take it from there.
