C63s AMG or M4? - Mercedes or BMW? - Heth

Which is the better car for a man who is finally in the position where he can buy one? Background: he has a deposit down for the new Jaguar F-Pace, but wasn't blown away by it at the London launch last week and is now thinking of scrapping that idea altogether and starting again. The 2016 C63s AMG, the 2016 M4 with competition pack, or should he wait for the new Alfa which comes out in the Autumn? The decision is keeping him awake at night... ;0)

Serious answers only, please.

A friend had a C63 AMG for 3 months. He got so fed up with harassment from white van drivers and boy racers that he traded it in for a more sedate Mercedes.

If i was ever in the position of spending that amount of money on a high performance car, it would be one which the maker would be happy to debadge and replace the 4 accessory shop look exhaust tips and replace them with something standard looking, thereby reducing the real problems Trilogy refers to of envious idiots, sleeper for me so Merc of the two simply because it can be made to look like a high specced C250 Diesel to the average person, can always fit the wrong badge for ultimate anonymity.

Nice choice to have to make, course if i wanted a car like that i'd buy a Lexus LS600h instead and get a bodyshop to disguise the hideously offensive grill..:-)

Both great choices. Beyond that I wouldn't know which way to jump.

Try both, have fun, take into account quality of service you get and decide on the merits of each.

I think both would be lovely to drive. However, I know two people that had C-class AMGs - one a C55 (3 or 4 years ago) and the other a C63.

Both owned them for about a year, and then traded them for big turbodiesels: the bloke with the C55 got a 535d, and the bloke with the C63 got an E350CDI.

They both gave me the same reasons for trading: the cars were huge fun to own for about 6 months. After that, both said it got a little tiresome with the knobbly ride, gung-ho motor and 15mpg. As the old French proverb puts it, the AMGs 'had the defects of their qualities.'

Have fun test driving them all, and see which you like!

I think in ride terms, both it will be the same AMG & M4. AMG sounds fab too

Never liked alfa's after driving one once. Simply any car that pushes your foot off the brake if you happen to need to turn the steering wheel is not for me!

It's no secret here, I'm a fan of BMW.

But the M3/M4 these days has a straight-6 330i engine with additional turbochargers bolted on. Whereas the 'old' M3 had a V8.

The C63 is still a V8 - 4.0 litre lump. Yes, with turbochargers, but it's a far better engine.

The only downside of the Merc for me would be that it looks like it's been magnetised, and then driven through the chaviest part of Halfords. Blingtastic !

My choice of the 2 would be the BMW simply because i dont get on with Auto boxes. But if you want an Auto, i would suggest you also look at the Lexus RCF. Not as flashy as the other 2, but i am sure its fun, better made, and much rarer too. But until you drive them its very hard to say what will feel right or not to you.

I love the look of that Lexus RC too. Have only become aware of it recently as they sponsor More4 Drama ('Spin') or summat?

However, if I had £55-60K to blow on one I'd chose something costing only 45 (can you get an entry-model Jag F-Type for 45?) and spend the 10K surfeit on another carbon road bike!

Not sure the BMW can be classed as a real manual gearbox, it more like an auto in some respects. Thats not a bad thing with the power avaliable, as one bad gear change will stick you in the nearest ditch
