Subaru Forester - Fuel Additives - tezmil1

Hi, I have recently bought a subaru forester diesel and upon reading the manual it states that no fuel additives are to be used at all.

I just wondered if there is a reason for this as my previous car was a nissan xtrail and I used to add millers eco to the fuel, I did not add this for extra power it was for keeping fuel system clean which at mot time mechanic commented that emmisions were extremely low and dpf light hardly ever came on whilst using this.

So for these reasons I would like to use in the subaru but just wondered why they state no additives to be used,

thanks in advance, Terry

Presumably this car uses a common rail DI engine, did the old one?

yes both are common rail diesel

I can't really see why they say that then, perhaps its something to do with warranty. I have run diesels almost exclusively for the last 30 years or so and have never used any additives without any apparant ill effects.

It's a legal thing - not to say anything may imply that additives are NECESSARY - most car owner manuals will say the same if you trawl through their small print.

You did not say the year.

Pre 2012 (? varies with build date) cars had major DPF issues and broke crankshafts. Unless you have a Full Subaru warranty , there is no redress and they are not cheap to repair. £9-£10k for an engine..

Adding additives = no warranty at all..

Using additives can damage the emmisions system. Thats from my manual.

I'm sure it also says don't use them in the Nissan hand book, and it definately does in my CX-5 manual.

I never had a DPF light up on my DPF fitted xtrail over the 4.5 years i had it, short trips or towing using supermarket fuel.

All you are doing adding stuff is wasting money. Buying a premium fuel with an enhanced additive pack would make more sense. But not for mw with only 7K miles a year.

Just use a fuel with lots of cleaning additives - like V-Power Nitro + - no need to add anything else.

I use 100ml of 2 stroke oil per tankfull in my Ford.www.rac.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?15038-Reducing-...n

One of the powertrain engineers i know who works with fuel systems was quite disparidging about additives in general. He said they can cause all sorts of problems but wasn't specific. He said just buy best quality fuel - your engine will love you for it.

Hi, Thanks for the comments. My Subaru is 2013. On my X Trail I got the dpf light every 4-6 weeks until I started using millers eco then it hardly ever came on.

This was why I was going to use it in the subaru, but I have not had any problems with light coming on in the 3 months I have owned it so maybe not required afterall, I did suspect that it may be a warranty issue but was just going to add a bit to keep fuel system clean but might not bother afterall.

Terry.
