I remember a letter in the Telegraph motoring section from a VERY disgruntled Audi driver, who was appalled at the news that his Teutonic chariot had the same engine and transmission as used in a Skoda :)

Obviously a very stupid Audi owner then. I'm surprised the guy could fit in his Audi, what with his massive ego and all...and people like him wonder why non German-make car drivers don't let them onto the road from slip-ons etc...the arrogance of the man!

Sharing is very common nowadays among manufacturers.

This proves why paying over odds for certain marques on a good idea anymore.

Many Japanese brands borrow diesel engines from European brands. E.g. BMW -> Toyota, Fiat -> Suzuki etc.

This is because they only sell petrols in Japan and USA (mostly).

Sharing is almost universal among same group (e.g. VW, Audi, Skoda, Lambo etc.)

The epitome of technology sharing surely has to be the 2 arch rivals in North America, Ford and GM, jointly developing the next generation of Automatic transmissions!

Say Whaaaa?

Even then will the auto compare to one fitted in a german car?

Why should that be surprising?

GM have been using Aisin transmissions, part of Toyota, for decades and Ford have been using Jatco, part of Nissan, for a similar period - but Ford recently switched to using Aisin althought their Powershift DSG is a ZF transmission.

Really? If you ever take the time to look at auction lists for Japanese home market only cars you'll see hundreds of diesels and these cars were never destined to leave Japan.

The Renault/Nissan link up with Daimler/Mercedes looks to be producing some very interesting results with the Infiniti Q30. Produced in Sunderland, I'll certainly be taking a very close look at them.

Sharing makes a lot of sense - there's a fair amount of rebadging/sharing platforms in the van world.
