Audi A4 or Saab 93 (Aero) Convertible. - Which drop Top? - chesterfieldhouse

Having retired on Christmas eve. l've spent the last few days considering which convertable to buy, as a secnd car; in the new year. It will be approximately a 10 year old. petrol vehicle & l've narrowed the options down to the Audi A4 1.8 or the 2 litre Saab 93 Aero.

I know this sort of decision is mostly down to personal choice however, l would value any opinion, considerations or indeed things to watch out for.

At 10 years old condition is going to matter more than make or model, but between the two the Saab will be faster, but in time parts may be difficult to get, particularly body parts.

I'd have gone for a BMW 3-series before either, but presumably you've decided against one of these.

There are other engine options with the Audi that are worth a look.

I have a '07 2.0T 9-3 Aero Saloon with a Maptun St1 tune to 260hp/360Nm (there's more available if you don't mind swapping the intercooler and a few other bits). It's a fantastic car. Very quick without having to rev the nuts off it (max torque from 2400rpm and max power at only 5300rpm). Very comfortable and so easy to drive. Overtaking is its forte (how does 40-80 in 5.2 secs in third grab you?). I'm a regular on the Fosse way (daily Leics to Gaydon, nr Warwick and regularly Leics to Corsham, Wilts) and there's very little it can't pass with ease on the climb out of Fossebridge dip! Love the heatd seats in winter and twin zone air con in summer (very powerful - designed for hot climates). And you can't go wrong with Saab safeety levels. Genorously braked too - 304 mm front and 294mm rear vented discs all round!! That's bigger vented discs at the rear than my previous saloon had at the front!! The bi-xenons are fantastic headlights (but need careful adjustment). Wouldn't hesitate to recommend one if you're looking for some fun with practicality (chap at work has a diesel cabrio with a tow bar for trips into France).

I've had it 5 years and if I was buying now I'd be after a Turbo X! It turned 100k a few weeks ago - not that you'd know it. I'm hoping for another 10 yrs.

I do all my own servicing. No probs - but you'll need a 32mm socket for the filter. And follow the service bulletin and replenish the gearbox oil to 2.4 litres (NOT 3.2 litres as per original fill and the Haynes - I used Castrol Multitrans, superb). Avoid if they've not had regular oil changes (the top end can sludge up and starve the chains of oil). I change every 5-7k with a flush. Also make sure to warm up and cool down the turbo properly each journey and keep the compressor side & throttle body clean.

>>considerations or indeed things to watch out for.

I'd steer clear of the Saab - I am sure there will be consumables available for years - major parts from dealers & scrappies - but it's the "little but vital" bits that can send the car to the scrappy - electric motors for roof mechanism, bits of trim to keep it "as new" should you have a minor bump (even a not so big bump will write it off) etc etc

I'd test drive each and see which one I preferred.

Thank you for the replies & opinion. Yes, l agree that the Saab, comparred to the 1.8 Audi seems to have better performance (210 bhp compared with 163) thoughh l have looked at the 2.4 version of the Audi. Though it may be smoother to drive; performance wise stats do not show a great deal of difference compared with the 1.8

In terms of the E46 BMW the 2.5 version is still in my mnd, as stated, a very smooth effortless drive apparantly.

Cyd - glowing reference for the Saab - difficult decision. As Trilogy said, time to get out & test drive a few.

Saab Uk have a full spares network and the vast majority of original suppliers are on board. Plus there's plenty of specialists. Why would you worry about putting some 2nd hand parts onto a 10+ year old car anyway?? 10 yrs old is 10 yrs old, not "as new".

Go drive one. Properly. I defy you not to enjoy it.

Cyd, that's exactly what l intend to do.

One of my daughters partner had a 93 saloon as a work car, l think it was an 05/06 & he was very impressed; a lot of car for your money.

Congratulations on your retirement

The Audi 1.8 20v turbo is a great engine

Both the Saab and the Audi can have their fare share of Suspension problems , as previously mentioned condition is all.

At 10 years old the bodywork may be showing some initial signs of decay, some years worse than others - check around wheelarches(especially from bumper>front wing), along sills (especially sill>rear wheel arch)

Personally even though I like Saabs the Audi is the better car, especially for long distance touring

I recently read a road test in a magazine from a few years ago comparing BMW v Saab v Audi v Merc convertible. 1st BMW, 2nd Saab, 3rd Merc, 4th Audi.

Mmmm - interesting, merits for all the candidates in differing areas. Perhaps it will come down, as l mentioned in the start pf the thread, to personal preference.

As my wife doesn't drive, this is purely a retirement present to myself. Purchase costs are also a consideration, as l can't justify spending more than 3 - 5k max. Looking at the Audi/Saab/BMW options, the 2.5 BMW seems to be approx' 1k more than the other two for the same spec'/mileage etc.

Oh forgot - thanks Big John for the sentiment on my retirement.

I'd look at a Nissan 350 Z or a Chrysler Crossfire - both excellent value second hand. I find most saloon based convertibles to be rather boring - unless you actually need the extra seats.

Steve, l know what you mean. There are sportier 2 seater convertables out there, though the 350Z & the Crossfire are too pricey, running cost wise; for me. l want the extra seats so my wife & others can join me; l have had 2 seaters in the past & they can be quite restrictive at times.
