VW Polo 59 reg ( new shape) - Bodywork problems - lordwoody

We have a Polo, bought from new and serviced by VW.

When it was a year old my father damaged the passenger side sill by not using the jacking point, we had that repaired locally.

A few months ago we noticed some bubbling of the paint on both sills, worse on the non repaired side.

We were sent to VW's approved bodyshop a month ago and after inspection VW agreed to fund 75% repair costs, with the VW dealer chipping in the other 25%, to repair the undamaged sill. We had the other sill repaired at our own cost ( about £500)

2 weeks later, after the car is back with us, the paint is bubbling again, on both sills. Much smaller bubbles than before, but quite a lot of them. They look more like air bubbles than anything else.

The bodyshop have taken the car back and are mystified. Originally they though it may be a batch of faulty paint but are now unsure. They have called in a VW paint expert who will examine the car next week and they will decide on a course of action. They are a big local body shop, approved for most major manufacturers, and are very concerned and helpful, but we are getting frustrated. This was a car we thought we would keep, now we feel we will have to get rid of it which will cost us money and force us to change cars at a time when we are unable to buy a new car again. There is no conclusion as yet but we do feel very disappointed with VW.

It is 6 years old. You have, as you say, had it from new.

When you say that you "thought we would keep, now we feel we will have to get rid of it which will cost us money and force us to change cars" how long did you really envisage it lasting ? 10 years, 20 ? Sooner or later nearly every car becomes scrap.

You can't really say that you are disappointed with VW. They have carried out the fix, something doesn't seem to have worked with it, and they are promptly investigating. You have no idea what they're going to say after that investigation is done.

In addition, your car came with a 3 year paint warranty, and a 12 year 'through corrosion' warranty. Do bear in mind that 'through corrosion' is certainly NOT 'a bit of paint bubbling' on the sills. That would be paint warranty, which expired 3 years ago.

It your gripe is regarding the sill side you had to pay for, then tough, if you used a local repairer, and not VW, then they have no way of saying if the repair was done properly 5 years ago, and can take no responsibility for it.

In total, I am rather mystified as to WHY you are so disappointed with VW.

Well put RobJP.My thoughts exactly.

It would have to be at least 12 years old before it would be of interest to me, 6 years is still brand new, once the paintwork is done get it rustproofed and a good blast inside those sills (or DIY rustproof, easy on a small car like that) and service it at least once a year thoroughly, especially the bits main dealers, and too few indies, service properly eg brakes, transmission oils etc.

No reason why this Polo shouldn't be still be decent enough at 20 if its looked after, lady round the corner still drives her Toyota Starlet and it still looks good.

Presumably the car is completely roadworthy. So the only reason to change it is that it no longer looks pristine. If you want your car to look pristine you have to keep changing it for a new one (unless something happens to it) which doesn't square with your thoughts above.

In essence you have lost faith with this Polo. Even if the bodyshop had done a perfect job, you would still have known, deep down, that it had been done. By all means try to get the bodyshop to sort the problem, and then keep the car - or why bother?

Just to update this, VW have now agreed to replace both sills and are taking away the old ones to carry out checks to find the problem. We are pretty happy with the result and will probably stick with the car now.
