Did you read this? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/774655.stm

A woman got prosecuted for drinking some water while standing at traffic lights. Can someone be fined because of drinking water while the car is standing? I know we are "supposed to be in charge of the vehicle"… what's your opinion about this? And does anyone know the outcome of the court case?

According to a pedantic, literal interpretation of the law the police are probably correct. It is, after all, an offence to use your phone in your hand while stationary at traffic lights.

However, it does seem over the top to me, when other, more serious traffic offences seldom get picked up.

The article referenced also deals with the case of a motorist who was fined for eating a chocolate bar while driving, again, presumably, on the grounds that he was not in control. The police relented on that one.

Stopped at lights is while driving - I'm surprised you're surprised.

Enforcement of all legislation is patchy due to lack of resources, ie cost to taxpayers - us!

There was a recent case in Germany where someone was found not guilty of using a mobile phone while driving because they were stopped and the auto stop/start had switched off the engine so they were effectively parked. I wonder if this defence would fly in the UK.

What do you expect in a country where common sense has been systematically abolished.

I expect 30 years ago the hofficer nicking someone for something so trivial would have had the mickey taken mercilessly for months after by colleagues and possibly christened with an appropriate permanent nick name, it's now more than likely a pat on the head box ticked on the fast track promotion greasy pole.

The older i get the more surreal and pedantic our world becomes, it would be funny if it wasn't actually tragic.
