Volkswagen Scirocco - VW Scirocco new engine diagnosis sounds suspect - Podulike

I have a 2010 VW Scirocco 2.0 TSI, with 39000 miles on the clock. It has been running like new with no signs of any engine issues. I get it in one morning at home and the engine wont start. The AA tow it to VW. VW have told me that the timing chain has jumped, snapping and bending the pistons and valves. They say it needs a complete new engine. What I don't understand is how I pulled up at home the night before, engine running smoothly and quietly, no issues and the next morning this catastrophic damage could have happened to the engine. Surely chains jumping and snapping pistons/valves would make some noise and would happen whilst driving. This just doesn't sound right to me, especially in a car of this age and mileage. Your thoughts appreciated!!

When timing chains go, they go. Instantly.

There may be a bit of good news though. VAG have had a number of problems with timing chains. Basically, the place that was stamping the chains out for them wasn't doing it to the correct quality of work. As such, if you've got full VAG service history, then you may well have a good chance of a significant cut in the cost of getting this work done.

Do research this evening, and then go in and push as hard as you can. To the service manager. Also contact VW GB. The last thing VAG want right now is even more bad publicity.

This this the first time in my lief that I've actually felt sorry for the Germans (though not those involved in the cheating) and VAG employees in general - they are really taking a helluva' beating (to borrow a phrase) at the moment on their engineering quality and integrity: all those years of bomb-proof reputations and "vorsprung durch technik" are effectively debunked. I bet the Yanks are loving it...

Maybe time to buy a VW - a couple of weeks ago I saw some (7, almost all black) brand new (delivery miles only) Golf GT 1.4 TSi ACT's with C/C and metalic paint on Motorpoint for £17k - that was £6.5k off the showroom price!! I almost took a punt, except they were all 5-door versions - I much prefer the 3dr. All gone now, though some similar new GTIs on decent offers (too expensive/hard ride for my tastes) are there. Beats all my local dealers hands down.

Basically dealers don't like fixing such failures as it requires stripping down the engine and rebuilding it which is complex, time consuming and carries a risking of problems afterwards.

Unless you can get your VW via your dealer to pay for the new engine then n Indie is your best bet to get it rebuilt. But really go back to where you puchased the car and try and ge them to pay for repairs under the sale of goods act.

A side note. I had an engine timebelt fail (same issues as a chain breaking) it bent valves etc. I had the engine rebuilt by an indie and it was better than new!. Car was quiter and nipper.

On a nother note 'vorsprung durch technik' when you attempt to translate you soon find it does to translate very will into english and for sure does not translate into "Advancement through technology" more like "winning margin through technology" so maybe they really mean cheating via technology?
