Fiat 500X (2015 – 2024) Review

Fiat 500X (2015 – 2024) At A Glance

3/5
Honest John Overall Rating
The 500X appeals with its retro-inspired look, and is easy to drive, but is now feeling decidely old-hat compared with most rivals.

+Stylish small SUV that’s easy to drive. Impressive ride comfort. Hybrid engine.

-Steering lacks feel. Rear legroom is limited. Prices now look steep.

New prices start from £28,250
Insurance Groups are between 8–19
On average it achieves 72% of the official MPG figure

If looks and a dash of style are your prime reasons for choosing a small SUV, the Fiat 500X will appeal. However, there are plenty of rivals out there that offer a more engaging drive, bigger boot and a longer list of standard safety equipment. More recent arrivals in the class such as the SEAT Arona, Volkswagen Group stablemate the Skoda Karoq and the big-selling Ford Puma all offer a better, more rounded experience. Read on for our full Fiat 500X review.

The 500X is the small SUV version of Fiat’s popular city car. As well as boasting a comfortable interior and decent road manners, the 500X is one of the few bulked-up 500s that has managed to retain much of the character that made the original so popular.

Following its introduction in 2015, it was facelifted in 2018 with some interior changes and a new steering wheel.

However, the big change came under the bonnet with the introduction of a 1.5-litre petrol engine and mild hybrid set-up. This is now the only engine on offer in the 500X.

Like Fiat’s retro city car, the 500X is easy to drive and comfortable enough over long trips, with well-bolstered seats and a colourful interior.

The ride is smooth, absorbing most of the lumps and bumps in the road, although things can get a bit uncomfortable with the optional 18-inch wheels that have a tendency to judder over potholes.

The 500X is now beginning to feel and show its age, though, in the way it drives and with a dated specification when it comes to infotainment and safety features.

Fiat 500X (2015 – 2024) handling and engines

Driving Rating
Mild hybrid power delivers decent fuel economy, while the 500X is comfortable to drive. It also offers genuine capability off-road.

Fiat 500X (2015 – 2024): Handling and ride quality

The 500X was developed alongside the Jeep Renegade and shares the same platform and off-road running gear.

As a result, it’s a genuine off-roader, offering a choice of two-wheel or four-wheel drive, with the latter using a torque management system to activate the rear axle whenever needed.

This means the 500X is genuinely well-suited for those in rural areas, and even with just two-wheel drive it will have little trouble navigating icy roads and hills, thanks to the addition of an electronic diff.

Of course, despite all that ability, the vast majority of 500X buyers will never venture anywhere more taxing than a grass verge. The good news here is that the 500X is quite capable and comfortable on-road.

All models handle keenly, with little body pitching in the corners. The steering is slightly overpowered, but not enough to prevent the driver from getting a fair understanding of how much grip is available.

However, the ride can become jarring over potholes and speed bumps. As a result we’d recommend sticking to the base model with its 17-inch wheels, rather than the TOP versions with 18-inch rims.

Fiat 500X (2015 – 2024): Engines

Fiat now offers just the one engine in the 500X and it’s a mild hybrid 1.5-litre petrol motor with 130PS. It has enough oomph for the car to work just fine in town and on faster roads, with 0-62mph coming up in 9.4 seconds.

While the engine is good, the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission it’s attached to is not.

The changes are too slow and ponderous, especially when you want it to drop a gear or three when trying to overtake slower traffic, or get up to speed when joining a motorway.

Fiat 500X (2015 – 2024): Safety

When the 500X was tested by Euro NCAP at its launch, it scored four stars. Now that result has expired, as the car has not been re-tested since new methods were introduced.

The 500X does come with six airbags, hill hold assist, ESP traction control, lane assist, traffic sign recognition, rear parking camera and driver fatigue warning. However, there’s no automatic emergency braking as standard.

The TOP models offer front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection and automatic headlights.

Fiat 500X (2015 – 2024): Towing

Hitch up an unbraked trailer and the 500X is good to tow up to 600kg. With a braked trailer, the maximum is 1300kg.

Fiat 500X (2015 – 2024): Practicality

Both the steering wheel and driver’s seat have lots of adjustment, which makes it easy to get comfortable, although the high-placed off-clutch foot rest means long journeys can make your left leg ache, especially if you’re tall.

The 500X is practical, with deep door pockets and lots of storage and cubby holes. The boot is a useful 350 litres and can be extended to 1000 litres with the two rear seats flattened, although the high loading lip can make it tricky to lift heavy items into it.

A two-level boot floor is available as an option and there’s plenty of head and legroom in the front and rear, which makes the 500X suitable for carrying four adults.

Standard equipment levels are good, with base models getting air-con, tyre pressure monitoring and cruise control.

As with the standard 500, the 500X can be upgraded with a huge number of options, including mood lighting, automatic climate control, leather trim and customisable dashboard finishes.

Fiat 500X (2015 – 2024): Quality and finish

The 500X gets a reasonably upmarket interior with a neat design that stands out from many other SUVs with its coloured dash trim.

The clunky door handles aren’t the nicest to use, but overall the quality is good. However, rivals from SEAT, Skoda, Ford and more have an advantage here compared to the Fiat.

Fiat 500X (2015 – 2024): Infotainment

The chunky steering wheel gets simple on-board controls and almost all models feature a colourful dashboard that’s dominated by a five-inch touchscreen, which outshines its rivals with swift menu changes.

A larger 6.5-inch system is available as an optional extra – with navigation – and again this is easy to use, with speedy operations and a simple but workmanlike layout.

Facelifted models from 2018 gained a redesigned – and better quality – steering wheel, new instrument dials and a larger seven-inch touchscreen as part of the UConnect set-up, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

Fiat 500X (2015 – 2024) value for money

Value for Money Rating
New prices now seem rather expensive when compared with those of the talented set of rivals that sit at the top of the small SUV class.

Fiat 500X (2015 – 2024): Prices

Entry point to the Fiat 500X range is the standard 1.5-litre Hybrid version that costs £28,515, while the TOP model adds £1460 to that total.

The Dolcevita version of the 500X is a more luxury-oriented version of the model with its main attraction being a folding fabric sunroof. In standard form, this model costs from £31,165 and the TOP iteration comes in at £32,165.

Then there’s the RED option that starts at £29,975 while the TOP edition ups that with a price of £32,625.

Look to the used market and early 500X models with higher mileages can be had for less than £6000. However, £7000 will get you a seven-year-old car with 70,000 miles and plenty of use left in it.

Fiat 500X (2015 – 2024): Running Costs

All Fiat 500X models now use the same mild hybrid power set-up with a 1.5-litre petrol engine. This delivers a best combined fuel economy of 49.5mpg and carbon dioxide emissions as low as 129g/km.

This means road tax can be as low as £210 for the first year, although some 500X versions will fall into the £255 bracket.

Insurance for the 500X shouldn’t be prohibitive for most drivers, as the range sits between groups 19 and 20. Nor will servicing be especially taxing, thanks to reasonable labour rates at Fiat dealers.

All 500X models come with a three-year, unlimited mileage warranty.

Fiat 500X (2015 – 2024) models and specs

The range gets under starter’s orders with the standard Fiat 500X 1.5 Hybrid model that comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear parking camera, cruise control and rain-sensing wipers.

It also offers heated front seats, fabric upholstery, climate control and a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen that works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Fiat 500X Dolcevita gains a full-length fabric fold-back sunroof, while a Fiat 500X RED edition is available for this model and the base version with its unique logos, wheel hub caps and red-painted trim details.

If you choose the Fiat 500X TOP version of the base or Dolcevita, you get keyless entry and ignition, chrome exhaust tips, front and rear parking sensors and adaptive cruise control.

You also benefit from blind spot detection, auto high beam assist, and a leather-covered steering wheel.

Model History

October 2014

Fiat 500X unveiled

The Fiat 500X is available with a broad range of engines and transmissions, including a new nine-speed automatic transmission.

The 500X has been engineered to strike the optimal balance of handling and comfort that the segment demands, while the latest active safety systems are available to assist the driver, including front headlights with DRLs; front fog lights with adaptive cornering; sophisticated ESC (Electronic Stability Control); Lane Assist (lane departure warning system) and Blind Spot Assist (lane change assistance system). A ParkView reversing camera is also available in the new 500X, as is the "Brake Control" assisted braking system.

Even the driving experience can be personalised and adapted, depending on how the new FIAT 500X is being driven and the prevailing driving conditions. The "Drive Mood Selector" has three different modes for engine, brakes, steering and gearbox/transmission settings: “Auto” offers the best compromise in terms of comfort, consumption and CO2emissions while “Sport” reconfigures the 500X for better performance and more spirited handling. “All Weather” adjusts the vehicle settings for maximum safety even in low grip conditions.

On the more rugged version of the 500X, “All Weather” mode is replaced by the “Traction” function, which speeds up the transmission of torque to the rear axle on four-wheel drive versions or activates the “Traction Plus” control system on front wheel drive versions, the latter offering an ideal solution to drivers who only encounter extreme low-traction situations occasionally, thereby avoiding the additional costs and slight emissions increase associated with a conventional four-wheel drive system.

The engine range of the new 500X comprises four petrol engines and three diesels: Front-wheel drive, petrol-powered models are either equipped with a 110PS, 1.6-litre engine with a five-speed manual gearbox or a 140PS, 1.4-litre Turbo MultiAir II petrol engine with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed twin-clutch transmission. All-wheel drive petrol models, which are equipped with a nine-speed automatic transmission as standard, are powered either by a 170PS, 1.4-litre Turbo MultiAir II engine or the 184PS, 2.4-litre Tigershark engine.

The front-wheel drive diesel range consists of the 95PS, 1.3-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel, equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox and the 120PS 1.6-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. The four-wheel drive diesel option is the 140PS, 2.0-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel, which will be available with a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic transmission. All engine and transmission versions will be offered in the UK, with the exception of the 2.4-litre Tigershark unit.

Designed in the Centro Stile, the new 500X is compact on the outside – measuring 4.25 metres in length, 1.80 metres in width and 1.60 metres in height (1.61 with roof bars, 1.62 with 4WD) – while spacious and inviting on the inside, with extensive use of high-grade materials, top-quality finishes and practical storage compartments – including a spacious 350 litre luggage compartment. The seats adjust to offer a high degree of flexibility and seven different interior fabric, leather and colour configurations are available, depending on the model and exterior colour.

A new Uconnect Live system also allows customers – through integration with their smartphones – to use many apps on the on-board system so that they can always be in contact with their friends on Facebook and Twitter; listen to millions of music tracks on Deezer and more than 100,000 radio stations with TuneIn; get real-time news updates from Reuters and get the latest traffic, safety camera and weather information from the TomTom Live service.

January 2018

Fiat 500X Mirror launched

Comes with UconnectTMLINK technology which is Apple CarPlay-ready and compatible with Android AutoTM as standard.

Available for the first time on a Fiat model, Mopar Connect combines remote assistance services and control functions in one app, to guarantee peace of mind when on the road and away from the car.

The Fiat 500X Mirror builds on the Pop Star trim but comes with satin chrome details, “Mirror” badge on the pillar, 17-inch matte black alloy wheels and xenon headlights. Blue Jeans matte paint is available as an exclusive option on 500X Mirror along with satin chrome roofbars . As standard, the exclusive matte Blue Jeans colour extends to the dashboard fascia and seat upholstery, with blue stitching accents. The 500X Mirror is available with the 1.6 E-Torq 110PS petrol and 1.4 MultiAir 140PS petrol engine, also available with DCT.

February 2018

Fiat 500X updated for 2018

The Fiat 500X Model Year 2018 offers next-generation Uconnect with 7-inch high-resolution touchscreen, from the Pop Star trim level up, and offers Apple CarPlay and Android AutoTM as standard for a smarter, safer way to use your phone in the car. The system offers key features including Bluetooth interface with hands-free system, audio streaming, text message reader and voice recognition.

The Uconnect system is now also available with Apple CarPlay to integrate the iPhone with the display and native controls of the car, allowing the driver to make calls, play music, send and receive messages, get directions optimised for traffic conditions and much more.

The simplified 500X range is now available in three trim levels, combined with a choice of three petrol and two diesel engines. The comprehensive standard equipment levels can be boosted with the addition of a number of packs, such as the Cold Weather pack, which comes with a heated steering wheel, heated front seats and heated wiper area, or the City pack to add electrically folding and heated door mirrors and rear parking camera. Marching Green paint is now available exclusively on Cross Plus models.

The 500X is available to order now priced from £15,550 OTR for the 500X Pop 1.6 E-Torq 110hp petrol.

August 2018

Fiat 500X revamped with new look

Updated inside and out with new looks and technology. Available with a choice of three trim levels, Urban, City Cross and Cross, three petrol engines, including two new, more efficient turbo petrol engines, and a host of safety assistance systems as standard across the range. The new 500X is on sale now priced from £16,995 OTR.

New daytime running lights and LED rear light clusters are standard across the range, bring it even closer to the look of the rest of the 500 family. Standard on the Cross Plus, and optionally available on other trims, are the new LED headlights, made in partnership with Magneti Marelli.

The new 'Urban' look features an all-new front and rear bumper design to make tackling city traffic chic, while the new Cross look adds new-look protective skid plates for taking on adventures.

What to watch out for

27-02-2016:

Minor electrical glitches reported in November 2015 Fiat 500X 1.4 Cross Plus manual with most extras added. The anti brake control off warning symbol keeps coming on randomly after starting engine. It does not click on when out in car, only at engine start. Supplying FIAT dealer found nothing wrong. Since then the symbol still comes on at start up, not every time and once the automatic main beam headlight failure symbol came on at the same time as lane assist system failure symbol.

12-01-2017:

Report of bizarre series of events with 4 month old, 3200 mile Fiat 500X Cross Plus that might be related to 27-2-2016 above. Driver was turning into a roundabout when the steering wheel locked and she could could not steer the car. All dashboard lights came on and she could not turn engine off. The handbrake had seized so the car could not be moved off the road. When the car eventually turned off after approximately 20 minutes there were many error messages including check engine, and failure, stop start failure etc. Thermometer read -85 degrees. Fiat have tested it and said nothing wrong with it.

17-03-2017:

Report of c onstant ECU problem on Fiat 500X: engine cuts out, parking brake locks on, dash still showing engine running so can't restart. Back to Fiat dealer three times for software update and reset. Still happening.

27-11-2017:

After leaving her Fiat 500X in her garage for 2 weeks while on holiday, owner could not start the car on the button. Called RAC who also could not start it. Car taken to suppying dealer who found tp end of the engine to be flooded (presumably a MultiAir), dismantled the engine and have been waiting for 3 months for parts to repair it.

13-02-2018:

Report of failure of engine of September 2015 Fiat 500X 1.6 diesel at 15,000 miles. Lots of smoke, high engine revs and engine would not shut down (funning on sump oil). Took to Fiat dealer who said out of warranty but would contact Fiat. The change oil light was on but the driver was going to get this checked at service which was due. Manual says when oil light is on it has to be changed within 500 miles. Dealer says in handbook it's 500km which the car was over by 92 km as it had been driven 368 miles with the oil light on.

06-10-2019:

Report of manual transmission shift trouble in hired 20,000 mile FIAT 500X. Suspect damage to external mechanism from previous hirers not lifting the collar that allows selection of reverse.
