Citroen Grand C4 Picasso (2007 – 2013) Review
Citroen Grand C4 Picasso (2007 – 2013) At A Glance
This is the car that would have surprised no one by becoming European Car of the Year 2007.
Without taking anything away from the Ford S-Max that secured the title (by managing to be both a drivers car and an MPV), the feature-packed C4 Picasso pushes the concept of compact MPV further than it has ever gone before.
Unfortunately it was a latecomer to CoTY and some of the judges did not get enough time to fully appreciate quite how much it offers.
Reviews for Citroen Grand C4 Picasso (2007 – 2013)'s top 3 rivals
Citroen Grand C4 Picasso (2007 – 2013) handling and engines
- Engines range from 1.6 e-HDi EGS to 2.0 HDi Automatic
- Readers report Real MPG to be between 24–60 mpg
Engine range kicks off with a 127PS 1.8 petrol from £14,995 and with a 110PS 1.6 HDI from £16,495. Top models are a 143PS 2.0 petrol Exclusive 6-speed EGS at £19,845 and a 138PS 2.0 HDI 6 speed EGS at £21,695. Emphasis is on the EGS which is the only transmission with the 2.0 litre engines and optional with the 1.6HDI.
So that's what we tried.
An electronic clutch can never give you the perfect shift every time. But because it's an automated process it does give you the same shift every time, eliminating ‘driver error' and achieving a lower CO2 output. Though a little bit slow, this box was the best of its type I have ever tried and was easy to get used to either in manual or in fully automated mode. It did a very good job of eliminating the torque reaction jerk between 1st and 2nd, which is always the biggest challenge.
The standard C4 range speed limiter is a useful feature, enabling you to programme in 30mph, then if you try to go faster your right foot feels like it's pressing on a jelly. The slight danger of this is understeer on wet leaves on a tight bend. You obviously can't set it at 30, keep it there and simply steer.
However, handling is generally all right. Better than the Xsara Picasso. But nothing like as sharp as an S-Max. If you want a Sports MPV you know where to go. But if you want the most up to date compact MPV with the most surprise and delight features, and an autobox, then it has to be the C4 Picasso.
Meanwhile, if you want a really cheap five full seat MPV, the Xsara Picasso soldiers on into the fairly distant future. A replacement is waiting in the wings, but Citroen says it won't be for years.

I'll start with the seats. There are seven of them. The rearmost two each pop out of the boot floor with a single tug. The centre three are each full-size separately sliding and folding with ISOFIX tethers on all of them. They also fold flat with one tug, but very usefully the squabs on the outer two fold up so they can be slid forwards individually to give generous access to the rearmost pair. Unlike the Zafira, two centre row passengers can stay in their seats while two more get into the rear pair. At 5' 9" I can happily sit behind myself in all three rows. All five-rear seats can be folded or erected in 30 seconds. And the flaps that give a flat load area are much neater, tidier and stronger looking than those in the S-Max.
Up front, the passenger seat also has ISOFIX fittings and the airbag can be de-activated by keyswitch. Unless you specify an optional DVD player, the cab is ‘walk through' with a flat floor enabling the driver to easily slide across and get out passenger side. All the dashboard functions, including a big digital speedometer, satnav screen (if specified) and now a digital rev counter are in the centre. The electric parking brake switch is bang in the middle. And most of the other controls are on the steering wheel itself. On ‘Electronic Gearbox System' (autoclutch) versions the Reverse-Neutral-Auto-Manual selector is a lever, and manual selection of the six gears is by paddle.
Interior lighting received a lot of attention. On Exclusive models you can change the colour as well as the brightness of the instrument display. Put your hand into a door pocket and it illuminates. There is soft LED lighting everywhere. And even a rechargeable torch in the boot. That LED lighting does not extend to the unusually tall taillights, though. They are lit by projector bulbs.
The view from the driver's seat is extraordinary. The car has the deepest screen on any car anywhere. So deep it requires double sunvisors that first slide down before opening. In the summer you'll be able to spot C4 Picasso drivers by their suntans. The screen is also panoramic. Citroen has managed to eliminate the traditional MPV screen pillar blindspots by thinner A pillars and large front quarter windows. And at no sacrifice in front-end safety as the C4 Picasso has gained the highest NCAP score of any vehicle ever for adult occupant protection.
Other goodies, some of which are model dependent or optional, include self-levelling rear suspension, a parking space measurement system, Citroen's lane departure warning system, cruise control with speed limiter, hill start brake assist, single plug automatic fuel flap (no separate fuel cap), individual climate controls, an air quality sensor and a fragrance diffuser. There's even a separate smaller mirror to watch the kids in the back seats.

October 2007
Transmission options extended
Six-speed torque converter auto offered with 2.0 HDi from late 2007.
January 2009
Petrol wins Engine of The Year award
2009 International Engine of the Year award in the ‘1.4-litre to 1.8-litre category’ has again been won by the 1.6-litre, four-cylinder direct injection turbo petrol engine designed by PSA Peugeot Citroën in cooperation with BMW Group. Introduced in 2007 in the Peugeot 207, the 175bhp version of the engine also equips the Peugeot 308 GT THP 175. The 1.4 to 1.6-litre engine range delivers between 95 to 175bhp and is capable of producing over 200bhp for future product developments.
March 2010
Emissions improved
Citroën’s C4 Picasso and Grand C4 Picasso are now even more fuel and CO 2 efficient, thanks to the re-homologation of the 1.6 and 2.0HDi diesel engines in both models.
For versions equipped with the 1.6HDi 110hp DPFS* power-plant, with manual and Auto EGS** transmission, combined cycle fuel economy is improved by almost 4%, whileemissions are reduced by 5g/km.
Cars fitted with the more powerful 2.0HDi 138hp DPFS* unit, with the Auto EGS transmission, benefit from a 1.7% improvement in fuel economy and a 2g/km reduction in emissions. The improvedemissions result in a 1-point reduction in BIK tax rates for all versions and lower 1st year VED for the 1.6HDi 110hp manual models - from £125 to just £110.

Facelifted for 2011
New styling elements including Citroën’s new chevron design on the front grille and tailgate; a new front bumper; new headlights and rear light clusters; and - on VTR+ and Exclusive models - a distinctive front LED light signature. VTR+ models also now feature stylish chrome side window sills and a chrome rear bumper strip, making them as stylish as they are versatile. Optional unique ‘Black Top’. Available in conjunction with 6 body colours, this option means the roof and A-pillars are painted with a luxuriously glossy Onyx black. The exterior door handles, door mirrors and alloy wheel centre caps also receive a glossy black finish to put the final touches to what is a very premium look.
All VTR+ models are upgraded to feature rear parking sensors, electrically folding mirrors, a USB socket and Bluetooth®. Similarly, all Exclusive models now benefit from stylish 17” alloy wheel; new upholstery; USB and Bluetooth®connectivity; and the new Citroën eTouch Emergency & Assistance System.
Citroën eTouch automatically or manually makes emergency or assistance calls, using a built-in SIM card, for a rapid response in the event of an accident or if the car is immobilised. Citroën’s eTouch system also allows drivers to consult information online at their ‘MyCITROËN’ personal space, which allows them monitor to their vehicle’s maintenance requirements and to receive advice on improving their fuel economy. These services are free and available 24-7.
Citroën’s new e-HDi micro-hybrid technology combines a second-generation Stop & Start system; a reversible alternator that recovers energy during braking; an e-booster function that re-starts the engine instantly (0.4 seconds); and a refined Euro 5 HDi 110hp DPFS engine with a 6-speed EGS transmission.
This advanced powertrain delivers combined cycle economy of up to 58.9mpg for C4 Picasso and 57.6mpg for Grand C4 Picasso, with CO 2 emissions of between 125g/km and 132g/km. In built-up, urban environments, this innovative technology can lower fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions by as much as 15%.
Both ranges also now feature a new 2.0HDi 150hp diesel engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox, which delivers driving pleasure and combined cycle fuel economy of 49.6mpg. A refined 2.0HDi 160hp with a 6-speed automatic gearbox is also newly available on Exclusive models.
The 2011 Citroën C4 Picasso & Grand C4 Picasso are available in the UK from 1 st October 2010, with Euro 5 compliant engines across both ranges.

What to watch out for
End of plastic dipstick of 1.6 HDI engine can break and drop into sump requiring removal of sump to retrieve it.
Clutch life of EGS can be as short as 24k miles. Should be a warranty issue as Citroen cannot claim driver abuse for failure of an automated clutch over which the driver has no control.
Audible signal may beep because a dog being carried loose in the rear luggage compartment has nosed or pawed the switch to lower the rear suspension for loading.
01-02-1014:Clutch of 2008 C4 Grand Picasso HDI EGC failed at 67k miles in December 2012. Replaced at cost of £715. System failed again at 78,500 miles in January 2014. May be actuator this time.
06-03-2011:Rear suspension sphere failure now an epidemic with parts on back order for 6 weeks.
26-03-2011:Fusebox prone to moisture ingress and internal corrosion. Needs cheching regularly. Any sign of moisture inside, dry out with a hairdryer on gentle heat, then reseal the box using clear bathroom silicone sealant.
23-06-2011:Waterpumps of 2.0 litre petrol engines can fail early, flinging off the timing belt and wrecking the engine.
16-08-2011:Citroen will not cover the Dual Mass Flywheel under the 3 year warranty.
26-06-2012:Yet another report of rear suspension sphere failure. Suspension will drop, then take a very long time to pump back to ride height.
25-02-2013:Another report of rear suspension sphere failure, this on a 2009. Citroen paid for the parts.
05-04-2013:Turbo of 30k mile 2008 C4 Picasso 1.6HDI failed for the usual reason of coked up oil supply pipes. Essential to idle these turbos from hot before switching off the engines.
22-04-2013:Rear suspension spheres out of stock in UK. Apparently 1,500 on back order and not likely to arrive in the UK until June 2013. Citroen now assures us the good news is that supply has been restored and Citroen working as hard as it can to get the parts to its customers as soon as they arrive. Any customer who needs advice on their order for these parts can call Citroen on 0844 463 3500 or 0844 463 3500 and Citroen will do its very best to help and assist. Citroen says it only affects C4 Picasso Exclusive 7 seat models with the pneumatic rear springs, and the company is dealing with 180 customer requests for parts through customer services here at Citroen . Hopefully additional parts production will solve the back log soon.
20-09-2013:On 42k mile 2007 C4 Grand Picasso a/c compressor failed at a cost of £1,000. Dealer offered a 10% discount.
27-09-2013:History of failures on a 2007 Grand Picasso HDI EGS Executive, now at 42,307 miles, costing £1,857.74: 17-08-2012: Replace Leaking rear shock absorber: £131.93 plus service charge. 21-10-2012: Injection Pipe fracture. £431.75; 25-05-2013: Rear Suspension failure. Plus headlight bulb fell out (broken bulb holder) New headlight. Total £698.63; 20-09-2013: All warning lights came on. Faulty EGR Valve. £595.43
06-03-2014:Repeat turbo failure on Picasso 1.6 HDi, probably because the oil feed pipe to the turbo was choked with carbon and was not replaced at the same time as the turbo itself.
02-07-2014:After a BBC 'Watchdog' investigation, Citroen agreed to pay 80% of the cost of replacing C4 Grand Picasso pneumatic rear suspension units on cars less than 10 years old with less than 120,000 miles. This is retrospective, so covers owners who have already had their rear suspension units replaced.
26-07-2015:Numerous problems reported on 2007 C4 Grand Picasso 1.6HDI: Couldn't get the parking brake off, speedo wasn't working: display just showed 2 dashes. Several hours of diagnostics said it was a wiring issue and parking brake button fault that Citroen dealer couldn't fix. Also needs new EGR valve and display screen.
06-01-2016:Electromechanical parking brake failure reported on 2008 Citroen Grand Picasso at 80,000 miles. Cost of repair: £1,000 for both sides.
03-02-2016:Turbo failure reported on 2008 Citroen Grand Picasso 1.6HDI at 66,000 miles.
05-04-2016:Report of one rear airbag failing on Citroen Grand Picasso. It was replaced at a subsidiesed rate of £75, but then the compressor failed and a replacement of that was quoted at £1,158.
26-07-2016:Diesel injector to first combustion chamber of C4 Picasso failed at 37,000 miles and owner toled best to replace all four with associated plumbning and wiring.
07-11-2016:Report of two separate injector failures on a recently purchased 40k mile 2012 Citroen Grand Picasso HDI, followed by failure of the waterpump breaking the timing belt. Suspect a possibility that it had been clocked.
14-02-2017:Report of problems with EGS transmission of 90,000 mile Citroen Grand Picasso 1.6HDI EGS. Occasional violent juddering. Clutch likely to be on the way out.
17-02-2017:Report of numerous typical 2nd hand problems with 2008 Citroen C4 Grand Picasso purchased in July 2016. Immediately needed two new tyres and wiper blades. Then suffered a clutch fault (reader did not say if it was an EGS). Back to the supplier for a new clutch. Subsequently suffered oil leak, front door creak, tailgate release failure, worn out aux belt and worn out brakes. Fixing oil leak cost £700.
22-03-2017:Report of repeated problems with actuator of 2012 Citroen Grand Picasso EGS bought used. Within within 30 days fluid was leaking onto driveway. Dealer wiped away the leak and returned the car. Every 2 to 4 months it leaks again. Second time the dealer reset computer. Third time they changed the gear actuator and said no more problems. Now warranty has expired it's the same all over again.
30-03-2017:Owner told that drivetrain, suspension and dampers are only covered by warranty for 40,000 miles and 3 years, whereas most of the rest of the car is covered for 60,000 miles and 3 years.
