It's still as soft and comfortable as ever, though, while its impressive versatility makes it a strong family SUV alternative to the Nissan Qashqai, Skoda Karoq and Hyundai Tucson. The Citroen C5 Aircross was a little late to the SUV party when it first arrived in 2019. Cars like the Ford Kuga, Peugeot 3008 and Volkswagen Tiguan were already several generations in, each with a loyal fanbase and healthy order books.
The temptation to shake up this sector with a brash-looking SUV boasting futuristic powertrains and car-like handling must have been huge, yet also something we've seen time and again. Instead, Citroen's engineers concentrated on things that actually matter to family buyers: it's extremely comfortable, safe and practical, while also being relatively affordable to buy and run.
Unsurprisingly, the Citroen C5 Aircross has already proved to be a success for the brand. And rather than messing with a winning formula, the 2022 facelift has addressed some of our previous criticisms without going overboard.
The interior remains massively practical. There's loads of head and legroom for passengers in the front and rear, while the boot space can range from up to 580 to 720 litres spending on the position of the rear seats. There's actually three individual rear seats, which is great for preventing arguments when you're travelling five-up, while they can slide backwards and forwards depending on whether you need to prioritise boot or passenger space.
The seats are fitted with an extra 15mm layer of foam which means you shouldn't feel any aches and pains after a long journey, while the standard-fit Progressive Hydraulic Cushions suspension does an excellent job of absorbing bumps in the road. The acoustic laminated front windows help reduce wind noise and provide a welcome boost in refinement.
One aspect of the Citroen C5 Aircross that we've previously criticised is the laggy infotainment. Early models got an eight-inch media display that was slow to respond, looked dated right from the start and wasn't all that intuitive to use. Basic models didn't even get navigation as standard (fortunately Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were on hand, allowing you to use apps from your phone instead).
A new 10.0-inch display arrived in 2022, bringing with it sharper graphics and a new position high on the dashboard. It's easier to operate on the move now, although it's still not quite as user-friendly as the Mazda CX-5's flawless system. Citroen C5 Aircross buyers now also get a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster which allows an element of customisation and adds to the cabin's premium vibe.
There are a variety of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines to choose from, although some buyers might be disappointed to discover you can't buy a four-wheel-drive Citroen C5 Aircross. In the name of efficiency, they're all front-wheel-drive, although Citroen's clever Grip Control feature is available as an optional extra and should help you keep moving when tackling a snowy road or slightly muddy campsite.
The Citroen C5 Aircross's focus on comfort means it feels a bit less agile than, say, a SEAT Ateca on the open road. The lifeless steering doesn't help here, either, but there's plenty of tech on hand to keep you and your family safe. It's quite a relaxing car to drive and, with that in mind, we'd look for one with an automatic gearbox to save you the hassle of changing gears manually.
A plug-in hybrid arrived in 2020, combining a 1.6-litre petrol engine with a 13.2kWh battery and a single electric motor. Citroen says it can travel under electric power alone for up to 38 miles, while it can be fully charged at home in less than two hours. If you're looking for an efficient family SUV for the school run with the ability to travel further afield at weekends, this could be it.
There are now four well-equipped Citroen C5 Aircross models to choose from, with prices starting from around £26,000 for the entry-level C5 Aircross Sense Plus. You'll struggle to spend £40,000 on even the plushest C5 Aircross C-Series Edition, which is good news as you'll escape the extra premium car tax directed at cars with a list price of more than £40,000.
The C5 Aircross isn't as ubiquitous as the Nissan Qashqai or Volkswagen Tiguan, so there isn't quite so much choice on the used market. There are deals available, though, while the subtlety of the recent facelift means older models are hardly any less desirable.

Citroen C5 Aircross 2024: Handling and ride quality
In terms of handling, the C5 Aircross is perfectly competent, but far from the sharpest in its class. The soft suspension means body lean is evident (more so on the heavier hybrid) while the steering is accurate but overly light and feel-free. Visibility is good, making it easy to thread through city traffic, and parking is helped by the reversing camera on Flair and Flair Plus models.
Thanks to its Progressive Hydraulic Cushions, the C5 Aircross's ride quality is the best in its class. It's not floaty, yet it soaks up lumps and bumps in the road very well. There's no harshness to it even on the most broken of British roads, although it isn't as good at dealing with high-speed undulating surfaces as well as more firmly-sprung rivals.
Citroen C5 Aircross 2024: Engines
Petrol buyers get the choice of a 1.2-litre PureTech 130 with a six-speed manual gearbox or a 1.6-litre PureTech 180 with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Both are very quiet and refined, which suits the car's nature, although the 130 is best suited to town driving as it's a little underwhelming when trying to gain speed on a motorway slip road.
The 180 has no such issues, with plenty of performance on offer for a car of this type - and the automatic gearbox is rarely caught out.
If you cover lots of motorway miles you'd be better choosing a diesel model. The 1.5-litre BlueHDi 130 is available with a manual or automatic gearbox, while the 2.0-litre BlueHDi 180 comes with an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.
For most people, the BlueHDi 130 will be punchy enough, with plenty of low down torque providing a relaxing drive. Opting for the automatic gearbox hampers performance (0-62mph in 11.8 seconds compared to 10.4 seconds for the manual), although it still feels more sprightly than the 1.2 petrol.
The C5 Aircross PHEV (plug-in hybrid) is becoming increasingly popular. With an official electric-only range of 37 miles (which is more like 30 miles in the real-world) it'll roll around town and get itself up to motorway speeds on electric power alone.
Combine the petrol engine and electric motor for maximum output and it feels much like the Puretech 180 petrol, albeit with extra body lean on account of the hybrid's additional weight. The triple-digit fuel economy figures will only be achievable if you plug it in frequently, however - drive the C5 Aircross without charging it an 35-39mpg is as good as it gets.
Citroen C5 Aircross 2024: Safety
The Citroen C5 was awarded four stars out of five by Euro NCAP in 2019 in standard form, but that jumps up to five stars when fitted with the Safety Plus Pack. This is option on lower-end trims but standard on Flair Plus and Shine Plus
Adding things like autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist and blind spot monitoring, it's a worthy upgrade and cars fitted with it are more desirable on the used market. But even if you go without, the C5 Aircross is still a very safe car in a crash.

The towing capacity for the Citroen C5 Aircross varies between 1250kg and 1650kg depending on which version you buy. That's sufficient for a small caravan or trailer, but with no four-wheel drive the C5 Aircross isn't ideal for anything larger.

Citroen C5 Aircross 2024: Practicality
You can spend hundreds of miles in a C5 Aircross yet still feel fairly refreshed at the end of the journey. You sit high up, which is great for providing a good view of the road ahead, and the seats feature extra padding to reduce aches and pains.
It's very pleasant in the back, too. There are three individual seats with room for three adults, if needs be. You can slide them back should you need more legroom, and there's plenty of headroom even for the tallest of passengers. The windows are big, too - great for reducing the chances of travel sickness.
There's a big boot with a wide access, although there is the usual lip for hoisting bulky items over. If you need more space, the rear seats can be dropped individually. It's very easy to do so and they fold pretty flat, leaving loads of room for carrying large items.
Citroen C5 Aircross 2024: Quality and finish
In some ways, the Citroen C5 Aircross feels well-made. The top part of the dash is trimmed in nice materials, the seats feel nicely trimmed and plush and nothing feels like it'll fall of or break easily.
However, it's clear that it's been built down to a price when compared with the posher, more stylish cabin of the related Peugeot 3008. There's more hard plastics dotted around the cabin than the Peugeot, and generally it's just not quite as well-finished as the best in class. Things improved when the Citroen C5 Aircross was updated in 2022, but it still isn't the plushest SUV on sale.
Citroen C5 Aircross 2024: Infotainment
The infotainment was initially the biggest weak point of the Citroen C5 Aircross and, although things have now improved, we still think there are more impressive systems available in rival SUVs.
Pre-facelift C5 Aircross models (that's those from around mid-2022 and earlier) got an eight-inch infotainment system fitted right in the centre of the dashboard. Base models didn't get sat-nav, although they did get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity for smartphones.
Not only was it quite a small system compared to rivals, it was also quite fiddly to use. The screen wasn't massively responsive, meaning you sometimes need to prod things twice, and the graphics looked dated. The most frustrating thing was the lack of physical shortcut buttons for things such as the heating and cooling, making simple tasks like upping the temperature infuriatingly complex on the move.
Some (but not all) of those issues were addressed when the Citroen C5 Aircross was updated in 2022. You now get a 10.0-inch display as standard across the range (including navigation, even on the most affordable models). It's now positioned higher up on the dashboard, making it easier to operate on the move, while the graphics are sharper than before. It's still not the most intuitive media system to use, though, and we prefer the system used in the new Citroen C5 X.
All Citroen C5 Aircross models now come with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, which looks pretty smart and is more akin to what you'd expect in much pricier, premium SUVs.

Citroen C5 Aircross 2024: Prices
As of 2022, new prices for the Citroen C5 Aircross start from around £26,000 and rise to more than £37,500 for the poshest plug-in hybrid model.
Those prices look pretty competitive compared to key rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai and Volkswagen Tiguan. What's more, the C5 Aircross comes generously equipped once you step up from the earlier base models. However, it's worth also considering the Citroen C5 X, which isn't a fully-fledged SUV, but has even more space and isn't much more expensive.
One problem is the fact that the plug-in hybrid is nearly £8000 more expensive to buy than the 1.2-litre turbo petrol. Sure it's faster and has the potential to be much more efficient, but you'll need to do the sums to work out if that's worth paying.
On the used market, prices start from around £17,000 for a 2019 Puretech 130 Flair with 36,000 miles.
Citroen C5 Aircross 2024: Running Costs
No Citroen C5 Aircross is especially pricey to run, although the earlier Puretech 180 petrols are the least efficient, returning up to 39.6mpg on the official WLTP combined cycle.
Plump for the Puretech 130 petrol and that figure rises to 44.2mpg combined. The diesels are where your money should go if long-distances are a regular thing, with the BlueHDi 130 managing up to 56.3mpg and the more powerful BlueHDi 180 still managing up to 47.1mpg.
The plug-in hybrid model promises an incredible 168mpg. But as is always the caveat with PHEVs, you'll only get near that if you do almost all your driving in electric power and charge up regularly. Leave it uncharged (or run it for long distances where there is no charging option) and you'll see around 35-40mpg.
Insurance groups range from 16 to 25, which is towards the lower end of the family SUV class, while no C5 Aircross is expensive enough to be subjected to the premium tax rate.

First details of all-new C5 announced
The C5 Aircross is the first vehicle to be equipped with a new suspension system with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions. This delivers improved damping for exceptional ride comfort that is synonymous with Citroën.
Equipped with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch HD touchscreen, the C5 Aircross features a wireless inductive charging function for smartphones as well as an array of cutting-edge driving aids, including Active Safety Brake, Active Lane Departure Warning and Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop Function.
Options include Grip Control and Hill Assist Descent Control to help you enjoy an off-road adventure in complete safety. New C5 Aircross will also be the first Citroën available with PHEV Plug-In Hybrid technology.

Prices for C5 Aircross announced
Prices start at £23,225 MRRP OTR. The official UK ‘on sale’ date for New C5 Aircross SUV was 4-2-2019, with order books opening across the Citroën dealer network on 3-12-2018.
Available in three trim levels: Feel, Flair and Flair Plus, the C5 Aircross is powered by a range of efficient, high-performance PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel engines, and offers the latest generation EAT8 fully automatic gearbox.
There are seven body colours: Polar White (standard colour), along with optional shades Volcano Red (Pearlescent), Cumulus Grey (Metallic), Platinum Grey (Metallic), Tijuca Blue (Metallic) , Perla Nera Black (Pearlescent) and Pearl White (Pearlescent).
A Perla Nera Black roof is available as an option on Flair and Flair Plus models, with four selected body colours.
Three Colour Packs add coloured inserts on the front bumper, Airbump panels and under the roof bars: Anodised Silver Colour Pack (standard specification), Anodised White and Anodised Red Colour Packs are optional across the range.
Personalisation extends into the cabin too, with three ambiances featuring welcoming colours and complementary materials for an attractive, practical and functional feel:
Inside there are three individual, sliding, folding and reclining rear seats, with boot volume ranging from 580-litres to 670-litres, and up to 1630-litres with the second row seats folded down.

Citroen is now offering an automatic gearbox with the PureTech 130 petrol engine in the C5 Aircross - with prices starting from £28,335.
The three-cylinder 130PS engine is the most popular engine in the C5 Aircross SUV, but buyers wanting a petrol automatic have previously had to opt for the more powerful PureTech 180. This has now been dropped as the manufacturer looks to reduce its average CO2 emissions.
The eight-speed EAT8 torque-converter automatic transmission is available to order now, with production starting in February and deliveries expected from March.
Combined with the PureTech 130 engine, the automatic gearbox is available in Flair and Flair+ trim, costing £28,335 and £30,535 respectively.
As part of the updates, the BlueHDi diesel engines have been rehomologated, resulting in marginally lower CO2 emissions. All BlueHDi 130 manual versions see a 3g/km decrease, from 108g/km to 105g/km, while the BlueHDi 130 EAT8 automatic see a reduction of 5/gkm, down to 100g/km from 105g/km.

Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid priced from £35,340
The Citroen C5 Aircross plug-in hybrid is now available to order in the UK, with pricing starting from just £35,340 for the Flair trim level. First customer deliveries are expected to commence from mid-year 2020.
It combines a PureTech 180 Stop & Start petrol engine with an 80kW electric motor, and an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The combined petrol engine and electric motor produces 225PS along with CO2 of 32-33g/km and fuel efficiency of up to 168mpg on a combined cycle, (WLTP certified, dependent on version).
With three driving modes, the C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid offers drivers the opportunity to optimise the vehicle to their driving needs:
- Electric – the car uses only the battery-powered electric motor, resulting in an ultra-quiet and smooth drive with zero exhaust emissions, offering a range of up to 34miles (WLTP certified).
- Hybrid – the car chooses the best mix of electric and petrol propulsion to suit the driving style whilst optimising efficiency.
- Sport – the car combines the power of electric and petrol motors to offer outstanding performance.
The C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid can be specified in two trim levels, Flair and Flair Plus, with standard equipment on both including: Citroen Connect Nav with 3 year subscription to TomTom Live Traffic, active blind spot monitoring, active lane keeping assist, active safety brake, front and rear parking sensors and a 180° colour reversing camera. Updated Citroen C5 Aircross range priced from £24,335
The Citroen C5 Aircross SUV range now comprises four trim levels: ‘Sense’, ‘Shine’, ‘C-Series’ and ‘Shine Plus’, with pricing starting from just £24,335. That is a £1,320 reduction under the ‘Fair Pricing’ scheme, when compared with the outgoing trim structure.
All C5 Aircross SUVs now feature LED headlights as standard as well as Citroën’s Safety Pack with Active Safety Brake and active lane departure warning for improved safety. Also included are rear parking sensors and 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, owners receive DAB radio, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto as standard.
‘Shine’ trim gains Citroën Connect Nav, a reversing camera, blind-spot monitoring, keyless entry and start and Advanced Comfort seats, amongst a host of other features.
‘C-Series’ versions sit above ‘Shine’, but feature a lower MRRP OTR, more equipment and – for online retail buyers – an extended five-year warranty. In terms of equipment, ‘C-Series’ models feature bespoke styling details and an Anodised Deep Red colour pack and adaptive cruise control. Intelligent beam headlights are also included for optimum comfort.

Prices start from £25,755 for models in ‘Polar White’ solid paint, with a choice of Cumulus Grey, Platinum Grey, Perla Nera Black and Pearl White paint at extra cost.
Powered by the acclaimed 1.2L PureTech 130 stop and start petrol engine and six-speed manual gearbox, C5 Aircross ‘C-Series’ models enjoy the perfect blend of comfort, performance and efficiency.
Based on the ‘Shine’ trim level, but priced below it, C5 Aircross ‘C-Series’ models offer a wealth of standard specification including blind spot monitoring, Active Safety Brake, reversing camera, power folding door mirrors, keyless entry and start, as well as front and rear parking sensors.

Citroen C5 Aircross updated with lower CO2 emissions
Citroen has announced reductions of between 1 and 7g/km of CO2 across Citroën C5 Aircross PureTech 130 petrol 6-speed manual and BlueHDi 130 Diesel 8-speed automatic versions.
The changes are effective from March 2021 production, with pricing remaining unchanged. For company car drivers, the lower CO2 emissions result in BIK tax band reductions of up to 2% – as an example, this reduces the cost to a 40% taxpayer by over £208 in the 2021-22 period (when driving a Shine PureTech 130 S&S manual).
In addition to its improved efficiency, the C5 Aircross SUV range benefited from a list price reduction of up to £1,320 in December 2020 under Citroën UK’s ‘Fair Pricing’ policy, which was announced as part of the Citroën ‘Advance UK’ mid-term plan.
Available in a choice of four trim levels, ‘Sense’, ‘Shine’, ‘C-Series’ and ‘Shine Plus’, all C5 Aircross SUV models feature LED headlights and a Citroën Safety Pack (Active Safety Brake and Active Lane Departure Warning) for greater peace-of-mind. Also included are rear parking sensors, 18-inch alloy wheels, DAB radio, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto, all as standard.

The new Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid Black Edition sits at the top of the range, above Shine and Shine Plus models.
It's recognisable by its Perla Nera Black contrasting roof and door mirrors, and 19-inch black 'Art' alloy wheels. An opening panoramic sunroof with sunblind and ‘Urban Black’ Alcantara trimmed Citroën Advanced Comfort Seats also feature as standard for enhanced on-board comfort. With immediate effect, customers who drive C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid will be notified by ‘Plug-in Reminders’ to help further optimise the efficiency of their Plug-in Hybrid vehicles.
The notifications, which come in the form of a messages on the touchscreen, has been designed to ensure that drivers can take full advantage of the efficiency benefits that their PHEVs – coupled with obvious environmental benefits.

Updated Citroen C5 Aircross priced from £25,515
Orders are now open for the revised Citroen C5 Aircross which is available in three trim levels: Sense Plus, Shine and C-Series Edition. Petrol and diesel 130PS engines are available across the range, paired with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic gearbox, Shine and C-Series Edition trims are also available with a Plug-in Hybrid powertrain that combines a 180PS petrol engine with an 80kW electric motor – offering drivers up to 34 all-electric miles (WLTP test cycle).
The updated C5 Aircross introduces an exterior design with a more vertical and modern front end, to reinforce the character of what is a safe and imposing vehicle. The revitalised front grille adds to the assertive new look, with the styling echoing the appearance of both the C4 and the forthcoming C5 X.
The updated model’s signature front end design features a new version of the Citroen logo, now seemingly detached from the daytime running lights, as was seen on previous models. The chevrons appear in black lacquer in a chrome setting, which now stand out against the central grille.
All the attributes of a powerful SUV are maintained in the new design, with muscular side panels and ground clearance of 230mm, large 720mm wheels, 360° protection (Airbump® panels and wheel arches), as well as a commanding driving position.
The Citroen C5 Aircross now comes with the brand's Advanced Comfort suspension and new Citroen Advanced Comfort seats. The Advanced Comfort Suspension system – which remains exclusive to Citroën – uses Progressive Hydraulic Cushions to absorb bumps in the road – keeping passengers in absolute comfort.
The new Advanced Comfort seat design – which debuted on the new C4 – features a core of high-density foam and an additional 15mm top layer of textured foam to ensure maximum comfort and support for the driver and passengers. Bigger battery for Citroen C5 Aircross PHEV
Drivers now benefit from up to 41 miles of electric range (EAER WLTP Combined) from the Citroen C5 Aircross – meaning a move from the current 12% BIK company car taxation band into a lower 8% band. As an example, this reduces the cost to a 40% taxpayer by almost £47 per month in the 2022-25 period (when driving a C-Series Edition Plug-in Hybrid).
The increase in Equivalent All-Electric Range (EAER) for Citroën’s Plug-in Hybrid models provides drivers with more freedom in urban areas and greater environmental benefits. The updated New C5 Aircross PHEV adopts a new-generation battery pack – which increases power from 13.2kWh to 14.2kWh – emitting only 29g/km of CO2 (WLTP combined cycle).
