Citroen C3 Aircross (2017 – 2024) Review

Citroen C3 Aircross (2017 – 2024) At A Glance

3/5
Honest John Overall Rating
The Citroen C3 Aircross is a car that says 'Yes, I have a family, but NO I'm not boring.' It's loaded with quirky styling features and has a lounge-like interior that makes you feel good about life. Note, however, that less quirky alternatives are fundamentally better.

+Spacious and practical interior. Interesting exterior looks. Impressive PureTech petrol engines.

-Only top-spec models have the key kit you want. Noisy on the motorway. Is neither great to drive or very comfortable.

New prices start from £17,160
Insurance Groups are between 12–18
On average it achieves 80% of the official MPG figure

The Citroen C3 Aircross first went on sale in 2017 and has proved itself to be a hit in the UK as Citroen's third most popular model, sitting behind the regular C3 hatchback and C5 Aircross SUV in the sales charts. It's always looked distinctive, but a 2021 update gave Citroen's smallest crossover a more angular face, added new colour schemes and gave the interior a (very) light refresh. The cabin has lots of space for a car this size and lots of flexibility, while the driving experience treads a line between comfort and fun – making a reasonable fist of both but excelling at neither. That said, the tiny three-cylinder PureTech petrol engines are brilliant. Read on for our full review of the Citroen C3 Aircross.

In the classic Citroen spirit of being knowingly different, the company has called its C3-based small SUV the Aircross, rather than sticking an X on the end of it, or using the word ‘sport’ in the addendum, as most manufacturers do.

Different it may be, but it’s quite the apt name: ‘air’ denoting spaciousness and ‘cross’…well, they’ve stuck an X on the end of it.

The change from MPV to pseudo-SUV is a pure marketing move: the compact crossover is an ever-growing market. That said, the Aircross is in no way an SUV because you can only get front-wheel-drive versions, albeit a fancy traction control system with a setting for muddy surfaces is available plus there’s a good bit of ground clearance – 175mm more than a C3.

While it doesn't exactly look like an SUV, it does look like a Citroen and by that we mean – quirky. It mixes curves, with angular lines and details, chunky wheel arch extensions with contrasting colour shades. You can choose from seven shades of paint – including new-for-2020 Khaki Grey, Voltaic Blue and Polar White – pair them with four exterior colour packs, then do the roof in a contrasting finish.

The same goes for the interior, where you can have a choice of upholstery, trims and colours that do a decent job of masking what is otherwise a fairly uninspiring concretion of moulded grey plastic. You also get an infotainment screen that isn't that logical to operate but comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so it doesn't need to be.

Inside, it makes a good case for being a proper MPV. It has room for four tall adults to sit in reasonable comfort and top-of-the-range Shine Plus models have a rear bench that slides forwards and backwards as well as a front passenger seat that folds flat so you can use the full length of the passenger space to carry larger items.

The boot capacity varies from 410 to 520 litres depending on where the back seats are set and all models come with roof rails so it's easy to fit a box to store any overflowing luggage the load bay can't swallow.

But while it's aces practicality, the driving experience is no better than average. It's a confused miss-match of direct steering, suspension that tries to be comfortable but isn't and a manual gearbox that is baggy between gears and notchy when you're slotting into them.

The PureTech engine is a gem, though. You can have it with 110 or 130PS, but it feels punchier than that: it's flexible in gear, happy to rev out and sounds nice while you're doing it. Its excellent fuel economy means the 1.5-litre diesel should only be considered if you're driving mega miles.

We would go for the 110PS Shine Plus model for its good value, which retails at £23,500. Three quarters of buyers choose a high-end spec and you can understand why because Shine Plus makes the interior feel posher inside and makes it more flexible, as well as adding useful kit like a reversing camera, front parking sensors and keyless entry.

But whatever you spend, the basics of a spacious, idiosyncratic small crossover are intact. And for that reason, it’s easy to recommend the C3 Aircross if your a family car buyer looking to add a bit of colour to your life.

Citroen C3 Aircross (2017 – 2024) handling and engines

Driving Rating
The Citroen C3 Aircross would get a five-star rating here if it weren't for suspension that occasionally crashed over bumps and a cabin that's noisy at speed. Its PureTech petrol engines are excellent, though, and it's a neat handler.

Citroen C3 Aircross (2017 – 2024): Handling and ride quality

Citroen puts a lot of emphasis on comfort in its marketing bumf so it's a shame the suspension doesn't float over every bump like Citroens used to. It's fine for the most part, but the crossover occasionally gets caught out by lumps and ripples in the Tarmac.

The payoff is it doesn't feel all at sea in the bends and its steering is surprisingly weighty and direct, too. It's a car you'll feel happy hustling about in and the perky PureTech petrol engines don't dissuade that behaviour.

It copes admirably in town, too. The large windows give excellent visibility when you're reversing and even the basic model has rear parking sensors. The thick front pillar isn't great when you're pulling out of T junctions, but that's hardly an issue that's unique to the C3 Aircross.

Where it does come a little unstuck is on the motorway. The Citroen generates lots of road noise at the legal limit, although at least you'll struggle to hear any engine or wind noise.

Citroen C3 Aircross (2017 – 2024): Engines

Our pick of the Citroen C3 Aircross range is the 110PS model. It comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and while the shift manages to be both lose between gears and notchy when you're slotting into them, it's not enough to take the shine off an engine that feels quicker and more flexible than you expect it to. It gets from 0-62mph in 10.1 seconds and has all the power you need for normal driving.

Naturally, the 130PS version is quicker – it does 0-62mph in 9.2 seconds – but because it comes mated to a slushy six-speed automatic gearbox, it doesn't really feel it. The gearbox's smooth shifts means it is worth considering if you often drive in town, but we wouldn't worry otherwise.

Similarly, the 110PS diesel model is only really worth it if you do lots of miles, when its superior fuel economy will start to pay off. It doesn't feel as spritely as the petrol engines, borne out by 0-62mph in 10.8 seconds, and isn't as refined.

Citroen C3 Aircross (2017 – 2024): Safety

The Citroen C3 Aircross was awarded five stars for safety when it was crash tested by Euro NCAP in 2017. Standard safety features include cruise control, a speed limiter and a lane-departure warning system, although the Shine Plus model adds automatic emergency brakes, which is a safety feature worth having.

Citroen C3 Aircross (2017 – 2024): Towing

All Citroen C3 Aircross models can tow a braked trailer of up to 840kg. Petrol models can tow an unbraked trailer weighing up to 600kg, while the diesel can pull 620kg.

Citroen C3 Aircross (2017 – 2024): Practicality

Like the kid at school that always had their hand up, the Citroen C3 Aircross has all the answers when it comes to practicality.

The Citroen C3 Aircross is only about 10mm longer than the C3 hatchback, but its taller roof means six-footers can get comfortable up front and not have to worry about encroaching on the knee room of the people sitting behind. The more expensive Shine Plus models come with Citroen Advanced Comfort Seats that have thick padding, without the clamping lateral support you get in sportier cars.

The back seat is impressive not just because tall adults get plenty of kneeroom, there's also space for your feet under the seats in front and an excess of headroom. The large windows and vibrant interior colours make it feel light and airy inside. It's the opposite of the dark spaces found in some rivals.

The boot is a handy size too – offering up to 520 litres with the seats up – and an adjustable floor means there's no lip to lift heavy luggage over. Tumble the back seats down and you open up a total of 1289 litres of load capacity.

The rear bumper sits quite low so even the ageing family hound should be able to leap in no bother and Shine Plus models have a folding front passenger seat that means long items don't need to be left behind. Shame it's not even an option on the rest of the range.

What you do get as standard are decent-sized door bins, a tray on the dashboard and a glovebox that sits below it. C3 Superfans will note the cubby between the front seats is a new addition for 2021.

Citroen C3 Aircross (2017 – 2024): Quality and finish

Citroen didn't develop Graphene – the man-made substance that's harder than diamond – but the interior plastics of the C3 Aircross sure makes you think it did. There's not an expensive soft-touch material to be found in there – they're all rock hard and scratchy while rapping your knuckles off the surfaces reveals them to be hollow, too.

All is not lost, though, because the Shine Plus model we drove had large swathes of tweed trim that make the short comings easier to forgive.

Citroen C3 Aircross (2017 – 2024): Infotainment

The Citroen C3 Aircross' infotainment screen is like a metaphor for the entire car – cool and quirky, but not the best when it comes to usability.

Citroen pioneered the idea of having almost all the car's secondary controls on the infotainment screen when the C3 Aircross launched in 2017 – it didn't work flawlessly then and it still doesn't. We're not sure how sifting through menus to turn up the heater will ever be easier than twisting a knob, but there you go.

On the bright side, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard so most of the time you can rely on their intuitive menus and impressively accurate voice recognition systems to do your bidding flawlessly. They give you access to your favourite phone apps including Google Maps, Spotify and various others.

On a more basic note, the C-Series Edition makes do with a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, while the Shine and Shine Plus benefit from a larger 9-inch item.

Citroen C3 Aircross (2017 – 2024) value for money

Value for Money Rating
The Citroen C3 Aircross is a popular car which means you have plenty of options to choose from on the used market, while the subtle facelift the car received in 2021 is unlikely to damage values of older models.

Citroen C3 Aircross (2017 – 2024): Prices

The entry-point to the Citroen C3 Aircross spread of models is the C-Series Edition, which feels like more of a loss leader as it’s only offered with the less powerful 110PS 1.2 litre PureTech petrol engine. With a list price of £20,770, it’s keenly priced against rivals like the Ford Puma or Volkswagen T-Roc, and even superminis such as the Volkswagen Polo.

Citroen really gets into its stride with the Shine trim, which is available with both 110- and 130PS PureTech petrol motors, the latter with the six-speed automatic gearbox as standard. For these models, you’ll pay £21,700 and £23,280, respectively. The 1.5 litre diesel Blue HDi model with six-speeder manual splits the difference at £22,845.

Then we come to the Shine Plus at the pinnacle of the C3 Aircross range. It too comes with all three engine options, with the 110PS petrol costing from £23,510. The 130PS with auto ’box registers interest at £25,090, while the diesel goes from £24,655.

Optional upgrades for the C-Series Edition are few and far between, with most extras aimed at the Shine versions such as improved seating, leather upholstery, and Advanced Grip Control that offers a semblance of off-road ability.

On the used market, less than £10,000 gets you an early mid-range Feel model with our preferred 110PS PureTech petrol engine and around 65,000 miles on the clock. Strangely, you'll pay about the same for the 82PS version of the same engine which is no more economical and, because it does without a turbo, feels a lot slower.

A two-year old C3 Aircross with about 20,000 to its name will start at about £15,000, so you get a facelifted version with a decent chunk off the cost of a new car.

Citroen C3 Aircross (2017 – 2024): Running Costs

Whichever C3 Aircross you choose to buy, you'll not have to deal with wallet-shattering running costs.

On paper, the 110PS model officially offers 54.4mpg and getting close to that figure shouldn't be difficult, while the 130PS model shouldn't struggle to return its official 47.3mpg figure.

The diesel is the most economical of the lot, returning an advertised 67.2mpg, but it's only worthwhile if you have high annual mileage.

First-year road tax ranges from £210 (123g/km CO2 for the 110PS diesel) to £645 (151g/km 130 PureTech in Shine Plus trim) and all cars pay road tax of £180 every year after that.

Insurance groups for the C3 Aircross vary between 14 and 17, depending on trim level. Oddly, the base C-Series Edition sits in the same Group 17 as the diesel Shine and Shine Plus models, so another reasons to miss out the base trim and head for a better equipped model.

Active Safety Brake now standard on Flair models

Active Safety Brake with Forward Collision Warning has been added to Flair versions as standard equipment from January 2018 production.

Active Safety Brake reduces the risk of collision by braking in place of the driver. The multi-purpose camera at the top of the windscreen detects obstacles, such as a stationary vehicle or a car moving in the same direction at a slower speed. The system brakes automatically when a risk of collision is detected, from 3mph to 52mph.
