Audi Q5 Sportback Review 2024

Audi Q5 Sportback At A Glance

4/5
Honest John Overall Rating
The Audi Q5 Sportback is a stylish SUV that doesn't really compromise on practicality. It costs a premium, obviously – but can you put a price on style?

+Fashionable alternative to popular Q5 SUV. Impressive interior that's barely any less practical than the standard car. Wide range of petrol, diesel and hybrid engines.

-Not cheap. Petrol models are thirsty.

New prices start from £46,625, brokers can source from £42,111
Insurance Groups are between 39–45

If anything, it's surprising that it's taken Audi so long to launch a niche derivative of its hugely popular Q5 SUV. Set to take on the BMW X4 and Mercedes GLC Coupe, Audi reckons that the Q5 Sportback actually won't be a niche model at all – in fact, it could account for nearly a quarter of all Q5 sales in the UK.

It takes a similar approach to the smaller Q3 Sportback, with a sloping rear roofline and a premium of around £2000 over the standard car. You might think that the more stylish design eats into interior space and it does, to an extent – with a drop in 40 litres of boot space compared to a regular Q5.

It's certainly not cramped inside, though. Access to the boot is good, while the luggage area's square dimensions mean it can accommodate a surprising amount of kit. There's plenty of space for rear passengers, too, and headroom is hardly limited.

The Audi Q5 Sportback is most impressive in the front, though. This side of Rolls Royce, there isn't another manufacturer that can make interiors as well-finished as Audi. It just exudes premiumness, with plenty of shiny finishes (in a good way) and soft-touch fabrics.

The Sportback gets the same recently-updated infotainment system as the regular Q5. That means there's no longer a rotary dial between the front seats for navigating your way around the nav display – a shame, as this feels safer to use than relying on touchscreen on the move.

At least there are still regular buttons and controls for important features (there's even a knob for adjusting the volume), while the media system is easy to operate. There's also Audi's brilliant Virtual Cockpit as standard across the range, replacing the standard dials with a customisable 12.3-inch digital display.

Buyers can choose from a plethora of trim levels, namely Sport, S line, Edition 1 and Vorsprung. We've driven the S line model and reckon it's worth the extra outlay over the Sport model – standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels, sport suspension and S line exterior highlights.

There's also a choice of petrol and diesel engines, including a range-topping diesel SQ5. The most popular model is expected to be the 40 TDI with its 204PS 2.0-litre diesel engine, capable of returning up to 44.8mpg.

Audi Q5 Sportback handling and engines

Driving Rating
The Audi Q5 Sportback is a refined and comfortable SUV – just don't expect to fling it around in a physics-defying manner.

Audi Q5 Sportback 2024: Handling and ride quality

Sport by name, sport by... actually, no. The Audi Q5 Sportback isn't particularly thrilling in the handling stakes – if that's what you're after, the BMW X4 and Jaguar F-Pace are far more entertaining.

What is is, though, is a comfortable and refined cruiser. Our test car was an S line model with the sport suspension and optional 20-inch alloy wheels, which meant that it thumped over potholes a little more than ideal, but standard adaptive air suspension should counter this on higher-spec models.

You get a high seating position, giving you a good view of the road ahead. Rear visibility is a little compromised compared to the standard Q5, but parking sensors are fitted as standard. We'd recommend the optional reversing camera if the idea of a multistorey car park in a bulky SUV is enough to give you a cold sweat.

Audi Q5 Sportback 2024: Engines

The big seller is expected to be the 40 TDI. This is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel with mild-hybrid tech to improve fuel economy, producing 204PS and 400Nm of torque.

So far, we've only sampled the 45 TFSI. This is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol, again with mild-hybrid assistance, producing 265PS and 370Nm of torque. It's a sprightly engine, more than capable of getting a lick on when required.

There two plug-in hybrid options – the 50 TFSI e and 55 TFSI e, each with an an electric motor combined with a 2.0-litre petrol engine. These produce 299PS/450Nm and 367PS/500Nm respectively.

Audi Q5 Sportback 2024: Safety

The Audi Q5 Sportback is yet to be crash tested by Euro NCAP. The standard Audi Q5 was awarded a maximum five stars when it was tested in 2017.

There's a whole host of drive-assistance tech on hand to keep you safe on the road. This includes Audi's pre-sense system, which can detect vehicles and pedestrians and take steps to prevent (or reduce the severity of) a collision.

The Audi Q5 Sportback's interior won't leave you feeling out of pocket. Sure, there's a small price to pay in terms of practicality compared to the standard Q5, but it's otherwise hard to fault.

Audi Q5 Sportback 2024: Practicality

If you need as much interior space as possible, we'd suggest looking at the standard Q5 (or, even better, the bigger Q7). But the Audi Q5 Sportback isn't as much of a compromise as you might expect.

The 510-litre boot is only 40 litres smaller than the Q5's, and comparable with the BMW X4 (525 litres) and Mercedes GLC Coupe (500 litres). All models get a powered tailgate, while access is easy enough (if a bit high for dogs jumping in the back).

There's loads of headroom, even for rear seat passengers, and there's a sliding bench as standard on higher-spec cars.

Audi Q5 Sportback 2024: Quality and finish

The finish of the Audi Q5 Sportback's interior is nothing short of impeccable. Everything you touch feels well made, while there's nothing cheap or tacky about any of the buttons.

S line models come with part-leather and Alcantara seats, but full Nappa leather is available as an option (standard on Edition 1 and Vorsprung trim levels). A leather steering wheel is standard across the range, too, while S line models and above get crisp stainless steel pedals.

Audi Q5 Sportback 2024: Infotainment

Infotainment is taken care of by a 10.1-inch touchscreen display that's standard across the Q5 Sportback range. It comes with navigation, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A Bang & Olufsen premium sound system is available as an optional extra.

The media system is a typically slick to operate, with logical menu layouts and super-sharp graphics. Our only complaint is that's it's pretty much touchscreen–only – there's no longer a rotary dial for scrolling through the menus. To get around this, you can use the in-built voice-control system – but how keen are you to shout 'hey Audi' at your car?

Audi Q5 Sportback value for money

Value for Money Rating
You'll pay a premium for an Audi Q5 Sportback, and it's yet to trickle down onto the used market. Expect it to hold its value, though, and running costs aren't extortionate.

Audi Q5 Sportback 2024: Prices

Prices start from around £46,500 for the Audi Q5 Sportback 40 TDI in Sport trim, while the petrol 45 TFSI commands a premium of around £1000.

The plug-in hybrid 50 TFSI e starts from around £53,500, while the SQ5 TSI is priced close to £60,000.

As the Audi Q5 Sportback is still a very new model, it's yet to trickle down onto the used market.

Audi Q5 Sportback 2024: Running Costs

For a premium SUV of this size, the Audi Q5 Sportback won't cost a fortune to run. The 40 TDI is expected to be the big seller and is officially capable of a respectable 44.8mpg according to WLTP fuel economy tests.

The 45 TFSI is predictably thirsty, returning 33.6mpg, as is the SQ5 TDI – which officially achieves up to 34.0mpg.

Fuel economy fans should look at one of the plug-in hybrid models. The 50 TFSI e has an electric range of up to 38 miles, while the 55 TFSI should be able to travel up to 36 miles before the petrol engine kicks in. Officially, they'll return up to 188.3 and 166.2mpg respectively – but don't expect to see anywhere near this without regular charging.

Model History

September 2020

Audi Q5 Sportback coupe-SUV revealed

Audi has revealed a coupe version of its Q5 SUV, set to take on the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and BMW X4 when it goes on sale next year.

It will be offered in a choice of Sport, S line, Vorsprung and Edition One trim levels when it arrives in UK in the first half of 2021.

At 4.69 metres in length, the Q5 Sportback is seven millimetres longer than its sister model. Its height and width are identical, but its coefficient of drag is lower at 0.30. The long wheelbase of 2.82 metres facilitates ample room for five in the cabin, the focal point of which is the cleanly styled two-section dashboard with its freestanding 10.1-inch MMI display.

As in the recently updated Q5 SUV, incorporation of the third generation modular infotainment system or MIB 3 has rendered the rotary MMI control dial obsolete and enabled the introduction of full touch-screen functionality for the monitor, as well as a greatly enhanced natural language voice control system.

This latest system is able to access information from the cloud to inform its responses, and can be activated by either pressing a button on the steering wheel or by saying “Hey Audi.”

The Audi Virtual Cockpit plus with its panoramic 12.3-inch display is standard for all versions in the UK, as are MMI Navigation Plus and Audi connect internet connectivity, meaning that when guiding the driver the Q5 Sportback can display high-resolution satellite images from Google Earth and use the swarm intelligence of the Audi fleet to deliver lane-by-lane information on traffic flow and traffic forecasts in real time, as well as providing alerts for upcoming hazards such as slippery roads and fog. Useful resources such as a news feed, weather and travel updates, local fuel pricing listings and an on-street parking assistant that gauges the likelihood of finding a space at a given location also form part of the Audi connect package.

Vorsprung versions raise the bar even further technologically, adding features such as a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, a head-up display, Audi Phone Box wireless handset charging and a host of advanced driver assistance upgrades covering everything from manoevring into a parking space and then reversing out again to turning at junctions, monitoring blindspots and observing motorway lane boundaries.

The standard powered tailgate glides upwards to reveal a luggage compartment with a volume of 510 litres, which increases to 1480 litres when the rear seats are folded down. Vorsprung versions offer increased variability thanks to their sliding rear bench seat plus, which has a 40:20:40 configuration and offers a movable seat base and adjustable backrest angle, liberating extra space for passengers or luggage as required. When its base is positioned as far forwards as possible luggage capacity can be increased by as much as 60 litres to a maximum of 570 litres. The optional storage and luggage compartment package keeps things orderly and holds luggage securely.

The Q5 Sportback is set to launch in the UK with two powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines – a TDI and a TFSI – each with 204PS and therefore identifiable by 40 TDI and 40 TFSI designations. The potent SQ5 Sportback with its 347PS twin-turbo V6 TDI will also form part of the first wave. Plug-in hybrid TFSIe variants with a choice of two outputs will follow a little later.

The four-cylinder engines are combined with a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, while the V6 TDI in the SQ5 Sportback works with an eight-speed tiptronic. All versions are shored up by quattro all-wheel-drive, with some featuring an on demand system that can disengage the rear axle in everyday driving conditions for maximum efficiency, and reconnect it predictively within fractions of a second when required.

To further boost economy a mild hybrid system employing a belt alternator starter also stores electrical energy generated during braking in a lithium ion battery. With its help the Q5 Sportback and SQ5 Sportback can coast with the engine idling or completely shut down, and are able to more fully reap the benefit of start-stop technology by disengaging their engines during deceleration at a higher speed of 13mph and below while also restarting impressively smoothly.

Prices will be confirmed ahead of the Audi Q5 Sportback going on sale early in 2021.

March 2021

Q5 Sportback plug-in hybrid TFSI e priced from £53,435

Tthe new plug-in Q5 Sportback delivers its zero local emissions driving capability with a choice of outputs - 50 TFSI e quattro models can draw on 299PS and will be available in the UK in conjunction with Sport, S line, Edition 1 and Vorsprung specification. Competition and Competition Vorsprung equipment options are fittingly reserved for 55 TFSI e quattro variants with their 367 PS power peak.

Common to all variants is a drivetrain combining an electric motor with a 2.0 TFSI petrol engine delivering 265 PS and 370 Nm of torque. The permanently excited synchronous motor (PSM) with its 105 kW and 350 Nm power and torque peaks is integrated into the seven-speed S tronic transmission, which channels output to a quattro drivetrain featuring ultra technology. In most situations, it supplies drive exclusively to the front wheels in the interest of efficiency, but the rear axle can be engaged predictively and in a split-second as required, ensuring that the advantages of quattro all-wheel drive are always available immediately when needed.

Differences in the boost strategies networked into the two versions of the Q5 Sportback TFSI e determine their system output and system torque. The 50 TFSI e quattro with 299 PS and 450 Nm accelerates to 62mph from a standing start in 6.1 seconds, while the 55 TFSI e quattro with 367 PS and 500 Nm dispatches the sprint in 5.3 seconds. Both top out at an electronically limited top speed of 148mph, and depending on specification both are capable of returning economy figures ranging from 141.2 MPG to 156.9 MPG, which equates to CO 2 output of between 42 and 45 g/km.

In both output formats, maximum torque is available from fractionally above idle speed, giving acceleration the impressive immediacy that is one of the many benefits of electrification. When the electric motor that makes this possible is operating alone, WLTP tests have confirmed that the plug-in hybrids can travel for up to 37 miles at speeds of up to 83mph.
