Why is my Volkswagen Golf losing power?

I have a 2000 Volkswagen Golf 1.6 and have problems with it holding back, and it has no power when changing up gears. It also judders. It's ok for a while, but gets worse and will hardly pull away. I've had two occasions where the car was stuck to the ground and would not move till we rocked it to release it. Any ideas?

Get rid of the car. Too much trouble.
