My Jaguar 2.0 diesel classic is spluttering under acceleration.

I own a Jaguar 2.0 diesel Classic 04 reg with 90,000 on the clock. Recently the engine has started to splutter, as if the idling speed kicks in as you increase acceleration (up to 50 mph). It seems as if the throttle hits blank spots and no speed is achieved. The main dealer is on about injector and fuel pump change at a cost of nearly £2000.

See the car by car breakdown entry for the Ford Mondeo 2000 - 2006. Same engine and running gear.
