Could my Vauxhall Zafira's suspension be failing gradually?

My seven-year-old Vauxhall Zafira has been faultless, but lately it seems to make heavy weather of speed bumps. Can the suspension fail gradually or is it always sudden?

The suspension bushes will fail gradually, but a spring around a strut could be broken at the cup end and still function.
